Login and Registration Issues
Why can't I log in?
You have to register a unique username. You also need to make sure your email address is on the Profile when you register. If it has been a long time (years) since you posted, you may not be able to use the username you used in the past. At one time, usernames were not registered. If you have registered, the top reasons why people can't login and post are: 1) Trying to use a username that is not theirs, 2) Typing the wrong password or having CAPS LOCK ON, 3) Having 'Autofill' turned on in their browser which puts the wrong username and/or password in. To Register, click on Register up in the red outlined box at the top of this screen, pick a username that is unique, almost all one word usernames have long been reserved. Write down the username and password you pick as you may have to enter it at sometime in the future.
Why do I need to register at all?
You don't have to, but non-registered users can only post on the classic view of the YT Boards. Most posts will fail if you use a non-registered username and, if someone else registers the username you use, it's their's and you can't use it anymore. One of the marginally effective protections that modern forum software uses against spam-bots is registration, so it is required. Registration will give you access to additional features not available to guest users such as emailing to fellow users, username protection, display options etc. It only takes a few minutes to register so it is recommended you do so.
How do you use my forum email address?
We don't, unless you contact us and want your password reset, that is all it's there for. If your email address isn't in your profile, the username you use isn't yours. We have no way of identifying the you as the owner of the username other than this. You can also reset your own password if the email address on your profile is valid. Take a moment to login to modern view, click on Profile and make sure your email address is correct. If you don't, you could permanently lose access to that username. The other benefit of the email address being in the profile is that if you are a regular poster on YT, replying to ads will be a little easier as your ad reply won't be treated as spam if you use words that sound like spam inadvertantly.
The forums put a cookie on my computer, isn't that a security problem?
No. A cookie is a small bit of data that helps a site remember information needed for you to access the site. Security software treats cookies as a security issue sometimes because there are sites that use them for tracking surfing or buying habits. The cookies from YT let you return to the site without having to enter your username or password. On Modern view, there are also cookies to keep track of what posts you read so you don't have to guess and both views keep any options you set in a cookie to remember them. If your security software or browser is set up to delete cookies from YT, you will need to reenter this type of information at each visit.
Why do I get logged off automatically?
If you do not check the Log me in automatically box when you log in, the board will only keep you logged in for a preset time. This prevents misuse of your account by anyone else. To stay logged in, check the box during login. This is not recommended if you access the board from a shared computer, e.g. library, internet cafe, university cluster, etc.
How do I prevent my username from appearing in the online user listings?
In your profile you will find an option Hide your online status; if you switch this on you'll only appear to board administrators or to yourself. You will be counted as a hidden user.
I've lost my password!
Don't panic! While your password cannot be retrieved it can be reset. To do this go to the login page and click I've forgotten my password. Follow the instructions and you should be back online in no time.
I registered but cannot log in!
First check that you are entering the correct username and password. The username is not case sensitive but the password is if it was created after the modern view was implemented on YT. You need to type it in the same way each time. If all else fails, just contact us and we can reset it for you
Back to top
I registered in the past but cannot log in anymore!
The most likely reasons for this are: you entered an incorrect username or password (check the email you were sent when you first registered) or the administrator has deleted your account for some reason. If it is the latter case then perhaps you did not post anything? If no posts have ever been made by an account, it is considered dead and deleted so as to reduce the size of the database. Try registering again and get involved in discussions.
I can't use a different username on every post like I could before!
Some people have used the username/handle and it's anonymous aspect, to add content to a specific post. That is really what the Topic and Post Subject is for. It's not an important capability and isn't compatible with modern forum software. You can still do this in the classic view but it will appear simply as anonymous in the modern view and your post will not be searchable under your username nor will the post count be credited to you.
Some special characters don't seem to work in my username or password!
There are a few characters to avoid in usernames, passwords and even topics and posts. A couple that will cause problems every time are the backslash (the slash with the highside to the left) and the vertical bar. You may actually be able to enter these but they will be stripped out without notice and the results may be that what you've entered is not what went into the system. Just don't use these. For usernames, use only A-Z, a-z, 0-9, -, _ and parenthesis.

General Site Questions
My browser won't load the pictures?
You may have a problem with the security settings of your browser. If you use a windows based operating system, chances are you run a security suite to protect your computer. The firewall portion of some of these products can do their job a little too effectively sometimes and start blocking content that you do want to see. Research the product you use and you may find it's blocking images as if they were advertisments because of the file name specified in the URL.
My browser won't pop up notifications?
Same as above only it is a pop-up blocker setting. That can be in your browser settings or your security software. If you want to normally block pop-ups but take advantage of useful ones such as private message notifications or tracking a topic, configure your browser to allow pop-ups on a site by site basis. Tell it to let this server (and others where valuable pop-ups are used) do pop-ups. Note: YT has no advertising pop-ups.
I get advertising pop-ups when I visit YT?
YT doesn't have any advertising pop-ups, you have spyware on your windows-based machine. Obtain free spyware checkers (for example from grisoft.com) and clean your machine. This is very important as your machine can also be manipulated by people on the network when it is in that state. Note again: YT has no advertising pop-ups. If a specific post appears to cause some form of advertising to appear or is just advertising, please report it immediately and we will delete it immediately.

User Preferences and settings
How do I change my settings?
All your settings (if you are registered) are stored in the database. To alter them click the Profile link (generally shown at the top of pages but this may not be the case). This will allow you to change all your settings. Some settings are determined by the setup of the forum and regardless of how you set them in the profile, they still don't actually work. HTML is an example of this. Some HTML is allowed in the classic view but the modern view uses BBCode (see the BBCode section)
The times are not correct!
In Modern View, the times are shown in GMT if you aren't a registered user, have your time zone set, and are logged out. If the time is off by a few minutes, let us know and we'll fix it.
I changed the timezone and the time is still wrong!
If you are sure you have set the timezone correctly and the time is still different, the most likely answer is daylight savings time (or summer time as it is known in the UK and other places). The board is not designed to handle the changeovers between standard and daylight time so during summer months the time may be an hour different from the real local time.
My language is not in the list!
The most likely reasons for this are either the administrator did not install your language or someone has not translated this board into your language. Try asking the board administrator if they can install the language pack you need or if it does not exist, please feel free to create a new translation. More information can be found at the phpBB Group website (see link at bottom of pages)
How do I show an image below my username?
Avatar images are disabled for now on YT. Different people consider different images offensive and rather than attempt to arbitrate this between people, it's much simpler to just disable the avatars. Using BBCode, you can personalize your message with an image but if there is even a single complaint, the post is deleted without questioning who is right or wrong.
How do I change my rank?
The rank changes just by posting. There are many very helpful people on YT because that is it's primary purpose, to help one another. The rank of the number of posts will often show that a person has spent tremendous effort to help people. That's the only significance of the rank.
I don't see any email functions to send to others on modern view?
Email features are not yet enabled. Due to inconsistent methods used by ISPs on spam issues, it's very difficult to send email as a third party because the ISPs assume first that any such mail is spam. It's up to the customers of such ISPs to make it known that they want all their mail. Until that happens, email from a common third party site fails too frequently to be of use. If we see changes in this practice of blocking valid mail, we will reconsider reenabling mail. Classic view still has the Send Email link but it is not guaranteed that delivery will actually work.

Posting Issues
How do I post a topic in a forum?
Click the relevant button on either the forum or topic screens. You need to register before you can post a message. The facilities available to you are listed at the bottom of the forum and topic screens (the You can post new topics, You can vote in polls, etc. list)
My post keeps getting rejected?
YT Users have come to expect that every attempt is made to keep postings suitable for all ages. The 'potty filter' was implemented for this originally and there are few surprises for the words it catches in respect to that. As of late, it takes on a different function. Spambots have overrun most forums nowadays at one time or another. Occasionally, they can only be identified by a few fairly common words. The list of those words and character strings can't be publicized for obvious reasons. The only recourse you have if the post is rejected is to either contact us with what you are trying post so we can resolve it for you and future posters or just reword it until you can get it to post. There are a small number of words that aren't offensive but will stop posts. You can actually guess these just by thinking about what products or topics are the most common in the spamming trade.
Your filter is too restrictive for how I post?
Any post that is offensive to anyone in the tractor community is not allowed. Imagine it's Sunday afternoon at the tractor show. Communicate with people on that level of decency, the YT community is helpful and made of good people. We support that by making sure that what they consider offensive is not allowed.
Your filter is broken and catches too much.
We have insight into what needs to be caught that you might not be aware of. Many thousands of posts are attempted everyday that are not from YT community. We have to limit their success while getting your posts to succeed. We can only know if we are doing the latter part of that based on you giving us the text of a post that shouldn't fail. We need your help on that. On the other hand, if the post contains angry words and phrases or words commonly used to belittle others, the solution is clear without thinking about it too much. Fact is though, there are a few words we'd use ourselves in a post that have nothing to do with that, they just help limit the success of waves of spambots that have crippled the site at times. If you are interested, study the topic at google and you will be amazed.
My site name link is rejected, why?
Self-promotion of an internet site is spamming. Spamming is one of the largest problems on the internet. For regular users of the forums, we permit links to personal sites and those which help answer a tractor question, but we take a hard line on direct spamming to self-promote. Once self-promotion spamming of any sort is discovered, the site name is blocked permanently and referencing that site in any post by anyone, is no longer possible.
My ad keeps getting deleted from the forum?
Ads for anything, including auctions, parts, tractors etc, are not allowed in the forums. They are deleted when noted. Ads may be placed in the text classifieds and photo ad sections of the site.
What happened to the OhTee forum?
Allowing discussions of politics and other heated topics simply did not work. The majority of posts sitewide began to deviate from YT focus which is tractors and old equipment. Members of the YT community were often harassed because of the tone that would develop. YT is not a political or religious site.
How do I edit or delete a post?
We have the modern view and classic views to support and synchronize. We don't have editing or deletion enabled because we can't synchronize those changes easily. It's possible to edit your post, but you have to use modern view to do this, and it may or may not edit the classic view version of the post (usually works). There is no way to delete it because it is put in to classic view using a different sequence. If you really need the post deleted, send us a message and we will usually remove it very quickly.
How do I add a signature to my post?
Signatures aren't enabled. People can view the information you want to provide them through the profile link of the modern view without having to view that information on every post. Naturally many people don't want to see the same text appear over and over plus signatures tend to be repetitive and take bandwidth without really adding to the focus of any given topic.
How do I create a poll?
Creating a poll is easy -- when you post a new topic (or edit the first post of a topic, if you have permission) you should see a Add Poll form below the main posting box. If you cannot see this then you probably do not have rights to create polls. You should enter a title for the poll and then at least two options -- to set an option type in the poll question and click the Add option button. You can also set a time limit for the poll, 0 being an infinite amount. There will be a limit to the number of options you can list, which is set by the board administrator
Back to top
How do I edit or delete a poll?
Unlike posts, polls can be edited by the original poster, a moderator, or board administrator. To edit a poll, click the first post in the topic, which always has the poll associated with it. If no one has cast a vote then users can delete the poll or edit any poll option. However, if people have already placed votes only moderators or administrators can edit or delete it; this is to prevent people rigging polls by changing options mid-way through a poll
Back to top
Why can't I access a forum?
Some forums may be limited to certain users or groups. To view, read, post, etc. you may need special authorization which only the forum moderator and board administrator can grant, so you should contact them. YT hasn't set up any private forums yet.
Why can't I vote in polls?
Only registered users can vote in polls so as to prevent spoofing of results. If you have registered and still cannot vote then you probably do not have appropriate access rights.
Some special characters don't seem to work in my post!
There are a few characters to avoid in topics and posts. A couple that will cause problems every time are the backslash (the slash with the highside to the left) and the vertical bar. You may actually be able to enter these but they will be stripped out without notice and the results may be that what you've entered is not what went into the system. Just don't use these.

Formatting and Topic Types
What is BBCode?
BBCode is a special implementation of HTML. The modern view only allows BBCode while the classic view only allows HTML. You can also disable it on a per post basis from the posting form. BBCode itself is similar in style to HTML: tags are enclosed in square braces [ and ] rather than < and > and it offers greater control over what and how something is displayed. For more information on BBCode see the guide which can be accessed from the posting page.
Can I use HTML?
No, not in the modern view, it uses BBCode. In the classic view you can't BBCode, but you can use HTML. The translation for these is done automatically where possible. Avoid excessive use of HTML in the classic view or the system may tag you as a spammer as that is how they ply their trade.
Why does my message look different in modern and classic views?
We make every effort to convert between the classic forum view HTML and the modern view BBCode. The translation is not always perfect so please report any really odd formatting differences you see.
What are Smileys?
Smileys, or Emoticons, are small graphical images which can be used to express some feeling using a short code, e.g. :) means happy, :( means sad. The full list of emoticons can be seen via the posting form. Try not to overuse smileys, though, as they can quickly render a post unreadable and a moderator may decide to edit them out or remove the post altogether.
Can I post Images?
Images can indeed be shown in your posts. Use the Upload Photo in Advanced Posting Options toward the bottom of the posting form and the link will be automatically inserted in your post. The photo will be stored on tractorshed.com. You can also upload your images to tractorshed.com manually and then use BBCode to insert the link (on the modern view) or the image URL box (on the classic view). We don't recommend you upload the images to 3rd party web-sites because most often, your account with that server will expire and the post will have a dead link. We ensure that no valid pictures are deleted from tractorshed for as long as the post is available. If you manually uploaded your photo to a tractorshed gallery, you can get the link to your uploaded tractorshed.com picture by going into any of the galleries, locating your uploaded picture and copying the text link show below the 'submitted by' line. You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor to images stored behind authentication mechanisms such as Hotmail or Yahoo mailboxes, password-protected sites, etc. To display the image use either the BBCode [img] tag in the modern view or the provided Image URL box in the classic view.
What are Announcements?
Announcements often contain important information and you should read them as soon as possible. Announcements appear at the top of every page in the forum to which they are posted. Whether or not you can post an announcement depends on the permissions required, which are set by the administrator.
What are Sticky topics?
Sticky topics appear below any announcements in viewforum and only on the first page. They are often quite important so you should read them where possible. As with announcements the board administrator determines what permissions are required to post sticky topics in each forum. YT would like to have stickies for the frequently asked questions in every tractor brand. We will be soliciting users in the community to work together to produce these a help to individuals new to classic tractors and equipment.
What are Locked topics?
Locked topics are set this way by either the forum moderator or board administrator. You cannot reply to locked topics and any poll contained inside is automatically ended. Topics may be locked for many reasons.

User Levels and Groups
What are Administrators?
Administrators are people assigned the highest level of control over the entire board. These people can control all facets of board operation which include setting permissions, banning users, creating usergroups or moderators, etc. They also have full moderator capabilities in all the forums.
What are Moderators?
Moderators are individuals (or groups of individuals) whose job it is to look after the running of the forums from day to day. They have the power to edit or delete posts and lock, unlock, move, delete and split topics in the forum they moderate. Generally moderators are there to prevent people going off-topic or posting abusive or offensive material.
What are Usergroups?
Usergroups are a way in which board administrators can group users. Each user can belong to several groups (this differs from most other boards) and each group can be assigned individual access rights. This makes it easy for administrators to set up several users as moderators of a forum, or to give them access to a private forum, etc.
How do I join a Usergroup?
To join a usergroup click the usergroup link on the page header (dependent on template design) and you can then view all usergroups. Not all groups are open access -- some are closed and some may even have hidden memberships. If the board is open then you can request to join it by clicking the appropriate button. The user group moderator will need to approve your request; they may ask why you want to join the group. Please do not pester a group moderator if they turn your request down -- they will have their reasons. YT has no groups enabled at present.
How do I become a Usergroup Moderator?
Usergroups are initially created by the board administrator who also assigns a board moderator. If you are interested in creating a usergroup then your first point of contact should be the administrator, so try dropping us a private message. Right now thought, it is unlikely that YT will be creating groups in the near future though after we make modifications to the classic view to support them, there may be uses for this capability.

Private Messaging/Private Emails
I cannot send private messages!
Private messaging is disabled.
I keep getting unwanted private messages!
If you mean emails, don't put your email address in posts made on Classic view. The email address is only necessary when registering your username.
I have received a spamming private messages or public topics/posts from someone on this board!
We are sorry to hear that. Modern forum software attempts to protect you from spamming through registration but as spambot software developers improve their product, this is not as effective as the tried and true methods YT users have come to use. Report any such occurrences and we will delete them and look for ways to ensure that similar posts fail in the future.

phpBB 2 Issues
Who wrote this bulletin board?
This software (in its unmodified form) is produced, released and is copyrighted phpBB Group. It is made available under the GNU General Public License and may be freely distributed; see link for more details. YT has made extensive modifications to allow it to support the community as they have requested and to strengthen it's standards to match the policies and user expectations of YT.
Why isn't X feature available?
This software was written by and licensed through phpBB Group. If you believe a feature needs to be added then please visit the phpbb.com website and see what the phpBB Group has to say. Please do not post feature requests to the board at phpbb.com, as the Group uses sourceforge to handle tasking of new features. Please read through the forums and see what, if any, our position may already be for features and then follow the procedure given there. YT may or may not implement feature changes the local copy of phpbb regardless of additions the phpBB Group may make. From a YT perspective, it is of more value to implement changes that are pertinent to the majority of YT users. Indeed, if a change is valuable to the YT community but not present in the phpBB Group version, it will be created and implemented locally at the descretion of the YT Administrator.
Whom do I contact about abusive and/or legal matters related to this board?
The ONLY avenue for this is to use the Reader Form link on every YT page or send to the postal address for YT. Please note that phpBB Group has absolutely nothing to do with it. (part of the above text and the phpBB copyright have been included as a courtesy to the developers of this software, YT has nothing to do with the phpBB group nor do they have anything to do with YT).
