8N clacking manifold update

Followed the advice here and used thermosteel on the pitted manifold area. Took my time over the past week with it and really did not have any trouble thanks to the good information including Bruce's 50 tips. Big hat's off to John in MI for the pointer to checking the manifold before tearing the...

Is this too much pitting on block behind manifold?

Yep I wish I had done that. For some reason I thought the sound was from inside the engine. I am not convinced that I had a dead flat manifold to begin with when I replaced it 10 years ago (it certainly isn't flat now and the tractor has been run very little in that time period). I just didn't...

Thanks Bruce, it's been a while since I went through your tips. Looks like I need to read them again! Dukester

Is this too much pitting on block behind manifold?

Ok, finally got manifold off to examine it and mating surface of engine block (recall previous post about engine clacking: Previous post about engine clacking). Link below to pictures of block and...

    8N Clacking (again)

Understood. I will inspect both closely. Too much going on last 2 days that I decided to wait until gaskets come in to take manifold off & inspect. Thanks for the pointer to this area.

Cool, I just ordered the gaskets so I will check it thoroughly when I take the manifold off. Thanks!

    8N Clacking (again)

I looked up Thermoseal but I am not clear what I do with it. Is it to be in place of a cork gasket or in addition to it? Dukester

    8N Clacking (again)

Well it's amazing what I will find if I actually open my eyes and look. Took a look this morning and black soot all around the far left edge of the manifold (see picture link attached). I got a feeler gauge out and there is quite a gap there. I could put the 0.025 and the 0.028 gauges combined...

    8N Clacking (again)

Thank you for this info. Is it possible it is a blown manifold gasket even though the sound stops when I pull the #4 plug? (It is the plug at the rear like you mentioned which I think is number 4).

    8N Clacking (again)

Well there is no oil in it now so I am not running it at all. If it is a bearing, is it better to just replace the one that is bad or is it better to replace all at the same time?

    8N Clacking (again)

I posted here a few months ago and life got in the way of doing anything further. Well I am back and have a bit more time now. To recap: When I run my 8N, it has a very loud CLACK CLACK CLACK from the engine - I mean scary loud. Clacking rate varies according to throttle up or down. As a test I...

Did you learn how to do it all on your own? I never had anyone around that I could learn from, and why I am on this board, HA
