Remove the plug with the square recess that is behind the engagement linkage. It will give you access to bump/release the engagement levers. Bumping one lever is all that is required as they are linked together.

    1980 D3 Caterpillar not steering

Early D3's just had a straight spool (no bearing) Later versions D3B uses the bearings. Would help if you posted s/n. The steering clutch control valves are a balance type valve, depending on correct position to control pressure. Internal leakage would bleed off internally through the return to...

    1980 D3 Caterpillar not steering

Check the small bearings on the end of the steering clutch control valve spools. These little bearings are known to fail and when they do they allow pressure loss to the steering clutches due to inaccurate spool control. There isn't much of an adjustment to the steering clutches. The only...

    Cat D6C Engine Identification

You've probably figured it out by now but that is a D6C with D333aT engine (4-1/2 bore. D333c's came later (4-3/4 bore). D333a's have belt driven water pump, D333c's have gear drive water pump. Be sensitive about water temp as they were somewhat prone to cracking heads.

My new (to me) Cat D6C

Not Cat's finest but ok. Somewhat prone to cracked heads and spun bearings if clearances become excessive.

My new (to me) Cat D6C

Engine is a D333a (4-1/2 bore). The 76A's never made it to the D333c (4-3/4 bore)
