Automatic center punches

I have several. They all work, or don’t work, the same. Sometimes they will click and make the dimple, sometimes not. Bang it around a bit, then it seems to reset. What is going on here? Not sure how they are made. Handy, and precise when the work. I entertain input on this. Thanks.
( I saw a guy on YouTube using a hammer on one!)

I will take a look at mine; I would think they come apart and could be cleaned and oiled. I also don't think it hurts them to use a hammer gently on them, mile looks like it's made for it, and the original mark is very small.

They are all made about the same way.
Could be dirty, wear or damage causing the misfires. As stated. Cleaning and light lube may help.

How they are made.

Somehow, the old one I bought in a box of other 'stuff' works best.

Has anyone tried the one with the external spring that you pull the top up and drop it?

I have a Starrett and a General, both work about 75% of the time. Also have one I picked up in the 2.99 tool bin at the hardware store and in works about 99% of the time.

They are not meant to use with a hammer, that's why they are called automatic. The two parts (top and bottom) are threaded together. If you want it to go deeper just tighten up the two pieces.

They are made that way to be adjustable.
