1981 MF 50C brake failure

Purchased a 1981 MF 50C a few months ago and the brakes were “iffy” on the drive home. The left one locked up once and smelled burnt. The left side of the casing was hot. Some black oil dripped out the differential seal, but stopped after things cooled off at home. Then the brakes seemed to be working, although with minimal stopping power. Later on, “somebody” may have driven with the parking brake latch engaged. Now there are absolutely no brakes on either side with the double-pedal fully depressed. Not even a scratching noise. All the levers and linkages seem to be connected properly.
The service manual says the 50C has wet disc brakes, and the number of notches on the differential carrier plate tells you how many discs there are. But there aren’t any notches on ours.
Anybody know what brakes we would have, dry or wet, and what steps we should take before we start thinking about tearing apart the rear end? We’ve never done it before and we don’t have a shop or a hoist, so is a brake job possibly too much for us to handle?
