Massey Ferguson 135 firing problem

Recently bought this 4 cyl continental gas tractor. Replaced battery, plugs, and plug wires for good measure. Motor cranked hard but wouldn't start. Checked for spark at plugs, nothing there. Checked for spark at coil wire, nothing there. Replaced coil, still nothing. Replaced ignition switch and wiring from switch to coil and starter, still nothing. What else should I check for. Again, it cranks hard but no spark at coil wire. Any help would be appreciated.

To check for spark, pull the center wire out of the distributor cap, hold it near a good ground, turn on the ignition and try a start. you should see A FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK. If you don't, make sure that your points are set correctly, and are not pitted, burned or corroded. Make sure that your coil polarity is correct(the wire from the distributor to the coil should be attached to the coil terminal with the same sign as the battery ground terminal.).Make a jumper between the battery to the key side of the coil terminal and check the spark again. If you get the requisit FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, check the wiring between the battery, through the key switch, etc, to the coil.

Would the coil not fire wether or not the points were good or bad?

The points must work right for the coil to fire. The points close and the current through the coil sets up a magnetic field. When the points open that field collapses an creates a high voltage in the windings of the coil. The points and condenser have to be good and working to get fire. Be sure the points aren't shorted by a pinched wire too.

I"ll pick up a tune up kit and give it a try. Thanks for all your help. Now I just have to hope the fuel system is okay.

The points open and close the primary circuit. Current from the battery flows through the points when theyare closed and then stops when the points are open, collapsing the magnetic field in the coil which induces a a voltage in the secondary windings of the coil that fires the spark plug. SO the poits must conduct the maximum current while they are closed and must be closed for the right ammount of time. If the points have high resistance and are improperly set, the current will not be a maximum, nor will the duration be enough and the spark will be weak.
SO you have to have good points.
