A good friend of mine just recently purchased a nice 2030 deere. The engine runs beautiful and everything works great....except for the fast that we can only make the darn thing go about 4 mph. The tractor has a shifter on the right that is a 4 speed shifter and another shifter on the left that appears to have some kind of a spring in it. In between these two shifters is a lever that I cannot seem to get to do anything. I have managed to find the parking gear and a mess of slow gears but cannot seem to find what I would think to be high range. Please give me some kind of a clue or at least point me in the right direction so that the tractor will move faster than I can walk. Thanks!! Kippster

Looks like your buddy bought a busted tractor. Why wouldn't he try all the functions before handing over the money?
Are all the decals gone form the machine that indicate the functions of each lever?
The parts manual is online at the JD web site. The service manual which he IS going to need is at 1-800-522-7448.
Is there also a rabbit/turtle,high/low lever on the left side of the dash?
If it doesn't work and the pto appears to be non functional as well. Better pull the trans screen plus the filter and look for clutch/brake metal and friction material.
The top will have to come off the transmission to replace the worn/broken shifter components at the very least.
How much did your buddy pay?

kippster,
LEFT hand stick is park/upper left, high range/lower left, low range/upper right and reverse/lower right. Middle lever is ind pto, check to see if lever by left heel while sitting in seat is all the way forward fo pto to work. RIGHT hand stick is 1-2-3&4 which gives 8 speeds if tractor is not equipped with hyd hi-lo.

Some independent pto Mannheim/Dubuque utility tractors had the mechanical pto disconnect by the left heal. Located between the foot clutch and the diff lock lever. And others didn't.
