How hard is it to change the digital tach to mechanical on my 1586. It's completely dead right now and it sounds like they are prblems all the time. I'd like to have an idea what I'm doing when I go to the field. Also do the mechanical tach tractors have a pyrometer on them - thats what I'm really after - rpms, mph combo and a pyrometer.

Never seen an 86 series, or any IH tractor, with a pyrometer.

I am pretty sure you need an aftermarket add-on gauge for that.

The 86 series had pyrometer if it had a digital dash. Granted I've only seen 1486s and 1586s with the digital readout but I would assume it went through the entire lineup.

I thought the digital dash would never last when our 1486 came with one, but it was still working as designed when it was sold in 1998.

You might check the junk yards to find one.

There is a mechanical tach listed in the parts manual, however, I have never seen one in a 86 series tractor. Speedometer is of course same needle, just charted out on dial. No pyrometer though. The 186 shows the two cable dial mechanical tach with speedometer drive off the differential ring gear but that is a whole different deal. Factory pyrometers were used only with the digital data center which you apparently have now.

My father-in-law has a 986 with the digital display. (For what it's worth, his brother has a 986 with the mechanical gauge so I'm familiar with both setups.) A year or two ago my FIL started having trouble with the digital display and found a guy in this area (Wichita, Hutchinson, McPherson, Newton, not sure where exactly but you get the idea) that repaired it for him. If I remember right, it was simply a solder joint that had come loose causing the whole thing to go dead. If you want, I can check with him to get the name of the guy who fixed it. Your's might have the same failure his had.

I got the name of the place that fixed my father-in-law's digital display. It was "Ron's TV & Electronics" in Newton, Kansas (~20 miles north of Wichita). Their number is 316-283-8873.

My FIL also mentioned that he has had trouble with the solenoid that sends power to the dash, radio, and blower. If this goes out and you don't have the blower or radio on, the only problem you would see is the display would be dead. Might be something to check as well.
