I was talking to a friend that lives around Kansas City, Mo. He was talking about how in Missouri you have to pay personal property tax on things you already own. He though it included cattle ,tractors, horses, etc. He lives in the city and has to pay it on all of his cars before he can get his license each year. How much is it on the old tractors like many of us have on this site??? |

It is only on things that require registration through the state here in KS. Items such as boats, jetskis, snowmobiles, vehicles and houses. They do not track tractors and I hope they never do. |

I live in Missouri and tractors are assessed by size and age. Many people do not report them and some cannot count cows very well.
A few years ago I was driving my "B" Farmall in a parade and out assessor remarked that I had done a nice job restoring it I told him that I would appreciate the comment if it was from someone other than the assessor. |

We have it here in NE too. We pay on all registered vehicles + equipment that is on a depreciation schedule. Cows are no longer taxed. |

They did away with it in Illinois in the 70's. but they raised the fuel tax to make up the revenue lost |

There is no personal property tax in Illinois. It was done away with in about 1970. I remember how much my Dad hated it. As I recall, they even taxed your furniture! |

Was it the fuel tax? I was thinking it was the state income tax. I really can't remember. |

How did NY state miss that one. Here's the list of taxes for a typical person here: federal,FICA,state, property (land value), school, 8% sales tax in our county, town tax , high fuel tax, tax on electricity and heating fuel, many cities and villages have taxes along with all the fees and other things that aren't named a tax. There's probalby a few more I've forgotten. It's about the only area we are still a leader in. Can anybody beat this list? |

Kansas has that too, but farm equipment is exempt. Individuals pay property tax on cars, trailers, boats, and real property like homes and land. Businesses pay property taxes on all that and small office equipment like copy machines and even the desk and computer I'm sitting at. Couple that with sales tax, income tax and even a special tax on savings account and people are still screaming that we should pay more. |

I had never heard of that until recently. Have a friend that owns a small pizza place in a little bitty town called Sparta, MI. He was telling me the village has enacted this personal property tax and he has to go thru and take a total inventory of every asset in his business. He called and asked about it and was told he needed to list every individual item in the building including inventory used to make the pizzas. This is just flat out stupid, there is no reason a person should be taxed on every bread stick pan and pizza cutter used in the business. I told him to send the form back empty, they have no legal right to come in his store and see the inventory. |

CA has "unsecured personal property tax" in addition to real property tax
individuals no longer have to list their TV sets and furniture to pay tax on it but businesses still have to
returns are due during middle of tax season when every minute counts |

We lived in Florida for six years, and at the time there was no personal property tax. (early '90's)
But gasoline was always about 15-20 cent a gallon more.
In a tourism state, the gas tax made up for the loss.
I thought it was fair, because if you were elderly, or didn't drive, you didn't pay.
Everyone who purchased gasoline paid. |
