I recently put an alternator on my 1969 Ford 5000
but have not been able to figure out how to hook up the tach. I believe it is counter clockwise.
Is there a drive unit that can get things together? Any help wold be appreicated. Thanks
Tj

What kind of alternator did you use? If your 69 5000 originally had a generator like my 67 5000 the tach was driven off of the rear of the generator. You can buy an alternator with the tach drive but they aren't cheap.

My 5000 also had a tach drive on the back of the generator, the replacement is a single wire alternator (delco) I think, but there is what looks like a
place on the left side of the motor, that some kind of a drive unit would go.Any Ideas there???

Newer engine had a drive in the arpeture below the oil filter... but a '69' block will NOT have the correct machining to support that. If it has the threaded plug in that hole it will not work.
If it's got a welch type plug it can be adapted to use the tach drive. That will also require changing the instruments over to the newer cluster... so you're into a few hundred bucks more when all is said and done.

7000's had their tach driven off the back of the injection pump. Would it be feasible to add that drive to a 5000's pump? Could use existing cluster, then.

Would it be possible to add the alternator someplace else on the motor and leave the generator in place to serve as a tach drive? Could gut the inside of the generator leaving only what is necessary to drive the tach? Just a thought at 12:30am... haha

Never thought of it but it might/could be done. Remove the cover on the left, rear side of the engine and drive the tach off the cam. That is where they drove the tach on the old Hundred Series - off the end of the hyd pump.
