My 3020 utility won't go into either reverse gear. Just grinds but if the clutch is feathered it grabs a little and moves slightly. Some other gear positions don't work at all. Others are fine. The fellow I got it from tried fixing it by splitting it and replacing the reverse gears but had the same problem so I got it cheap. Where do I start?

start by trying to adjust the shift linkages. the one you will want to adjust is the linkage that is moved when you shift from one to three or three to three reverse. if you look at the shift arms on the right hand side of the transmission, it is the upper one. if this fails to solve the problem, then it is in the transmission drive shaft. that requires a split and i would suggest a complete rebuild of that shaft (synchros, gears, shift colars, and the shift cam- the plate on the side of the transmission case with the grooves cut into it).
