1964 ford 4000

Am looking at a 64 ford 4000 high crop or row crop tractor. It has selecto matic trans-live pto good rubber and paint. Was wondering the horse power and what they are worth. It is a 4 cyl gasser and has decent paint. Haven't heard it run yet. What do I look for.-Bill

It is a Select-O-Speed transmission. HP is around 45. Make sure you hear it run and put the transmission through all ratios both cold and at normal operating temperature.

In order to check an engine that is supposed to be in good condition, I take along a compression tester and a vacuum gauge. Neither costs much and will tell you a lot about the motor condition and what you may be looking at spending to bring it up to good condition. also see what the oil pressure is once it is up to operating temperature. 40lbs would be good. I like row crop models myself, and if it were actually a high crop it is worth probably $500 - $800 more than the standard row crop in equivalent condition

I would also test the power steering with the tractor stationary and, preferrably, with the oil fully up to operating temperature.

Many of the pumps on these old machines are worn out and many of the assist cylinders leak. Look for rust on the cylinder rod.

Select-O-Speed transmissions all had independent PTO, not live PTO.

The tractor is worth between 1500 and 4000 dollars. Area of the country and condition dictate the difference. Hard to say any closer that that without seeing it.
