Am looking at a 64 ford 4000 high crop or row crop tractor. It has selecto matic trans-live pto good rubber and paint. Was wondering the horse power and what they are worth. It is a 4 cyl gasser and has decent paint. Haven't heard it run yet. What do I look for.-Bill |

It is a Select-O-Speed transmission. HP is around 45. Make sure you hear it run and put the transmission through all ratios both cold and at normal operating temperature. |

In order to check an engine that is supposed to be in good condition, I take along a compression tester and a vacuum gauge. Neither costs much and will tell you a lot about the motor condition and what you may be looking at spending to bring it up to good condition. also see what the oil pressure is once it is up to operating temperature. 40lbs would be good. I like row crop models myself, and if it were actually a high crop it is worth probably $500 - $800 more than the standard row crop in equivalent condition |

There's good advise below, Bill.
I would also test the power steering with the tractor stationary and, preferrably, with the oil fully up to operating temperature.
Many of the pumps on these old machines are worn out and many of the assist cylinders leak. Look for rust on the cylinder rod.

Select-O-Speed transmissions all had independent PTO, not live PTO. |

Hmm! Where I grew up Independent PTO is also live PTO. We used to call 'em independent live PTO in the 60s when I was a kid.
Therefore Indepensdent PTO is live PTO, just a better and different way of engaging the live PTO. |

Ford made a distinction between the two. What Ford called "Live PTO" is run off of the clutch on a manual transmission. With the clutch pedal halfway in, the transmission is disengaged but the PTO is still engaged. With the clutch all of the way in the transmission and the PTO are both disengaged, and with the clutch all of the way out they are both engaged. Independent PTO is controlled with a separate handle, and if the handle is in the "Engaged" position the PTO will run no mater what position the clutch is in, even all of the way in. Since there is no clutch pedal on a S-O-S, only an inching pedal, they only made the S-O-S models with Independent PTO or no PTO. |

The tractor is worth between 1500 and 4000 dollars. Area of the country and condition dictate the difference. Hard to say any closer that that without seeing it. |
