I posted a while back about a 4430 that was slipping on high gears...2r,2, and 4. Turns out my line on clutch pack is still in place. The disc in the clutch do appear to be wore out. I have taken a look at it and wondering if I should buy a rebuilt clutch pack or try and replace parts of this one that appear to be worn. I"m also having problems with the markings on housings matching what the parts book says they should be. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,

John

What's your tractor serial number and what are some of the numbers you see on the two-speed components?

4430s were produced for five years and several changes were made.

Assuming there is adequate oil to the two-speed (a big assumption these days) the most likely problem for your complaint is poor sealing of the inner brake piston packing. An improved piston with two oil holes cured this problem.

Unless the 2 iron clutch drum sealing rings have worn badly into the brake housing, the assembly is well worth rebuilding. Don't just take the friction disks out. Tear the whole thing apart and check the planet pinion shafts and bearings. Expect all the bushings and thrust washers to to need replaced, also.

When you get it back together, make sure the tractor will pass system and lube pressure tests with hot oil.

Tractor serial number is 4430H 045036R. The drum is marked R57113. The piece with the tube is marked R50347. The parts book online shows both componets starting with a six. Thanks for the advice.

This is the only housing listed for your SN range AR82374 HOUSING 1 (MARKED R62838 OR R65226) (SUB FOR AR77519 OR AR61551)

Note the serial number in the footnote and that R57113 is listed in footnote !!!
As JD has changed/updated parts they changed part #s.
AR80118 DRUM 1 (MARKED R57113 OR R64383) (SUB AR78253, AR78252, (6) R47074 AND (6) R57115) (SUB FOR AR54529, AR65230 OR AR68392) """"""""(ALSO ORDER THE FOLLOWING IF TRACTOR SERIAL NUMBER IS PRIOR TO 041801"""""""""": R59470, R79522, (6) R50348, (3) AR83798, (4) R39259, (6) R59468, (3) R50152 AND (2) RE29815)

Thanks Jim! I spoke with a parts person and he told me the R50347 showed up on a 4230. I've got a 4430, but I don't know if this tractor has been into before. You are saying that if I match parts for serial number, these parts should work? I can see some visible damage at the center hole in the housing. The drum appears to be ok. Would you think the drum needs replacing also???

The R50347 in the 4230 pc # 1294 subs the same part as 4430

AR61551 HOUSING 1 (MARKED R50347) """""(SUB AR82374""""", AR77262, R62690 AND 34H264)

If drum is good I'd reuse it.

You are saying that if I match parts for serial number, these parts should work? Yes I think they will unless my old timers is flaring up again.

"The drum is marked R57113. The piece with the tube is marked R50347."

I believe you have authentic, original, factory installed parts. But I would need a twenty plus year old paper catalog to prove it. As Deere "updated" their parts programs over the years, some information always got left out.

If I understand you correctly, the brake housing is questionable. This isn't good. Time to start pricing parts. I would not give $1600 for the new housing. I would buy one from the salvage yard first. If money were a minor consideration, I would think about a complete new unit.
