Talking about tractor tires ofcourse. What product is the best for keeping them from dry rot, etc. I think the Ultra Violet light is at fault for that, but what snake oil do you guys put on your used tires to make them look and feel like new.

Keep them out of the sun. One thing that some people don't realize is that some/all/most tire mfgrs use a chemical in the tire that keeps the rubber supple so that it doesn't dry up and crack. This requires the tire to be exercised at some frequency to keep the plasticizers moving through the tire to keep it from cracking.

For an implement, sitting in a field for years in the bright sunlight all bets are off. However, I have some GY rib tires of about 670x15, implement rib, for a number that have had such offensive treatment for at least 8 years and no signs of splitting and cracking yet. I just assume that GY knows what abuse the tires will receive and puts extra emollients in the tires to combat the obvious.

My 2c and worth every penny you paid for it.

Mark

Some years ago there was a tire paint one could buy at NAPA that if mixed thick it would fill in cracks and make the dried out tire more flexable. Its no longer avaiable, just the stuff that makes the tire look wet. It doesn't fill in the cracks.
I guess they took it off the market because it was causing the tires to last longer and they couldn't sell more tyres.

I do this on ALL of my tires, not just tractor tires:
1. Scrub with Simple Green & a stiff-bristled brush
2. Pressure Wash
3. Apply liberal amounts of Armor All with UV protection - (UV-A & UV-B protectants)

Real ironic, I just finished spraying my finish mower tires with armor-all. I set the mower up on blocks and spin the tires and squirt. Ellis

Armor All for the ones that get used fairly often and come near the shop door now and then. For the ones that don't get used so much, pieces of scrap plywood to shield them from the sun.

I"ve been told that vaseline rubbed into the side walls will preserve tires. Never tried it myself, just wondering if anyone else has tried it.

I use a product called Aerospace 303 on tires and the vinyl top on the cars. I get it at the local NAPA store. It has done very well on the 40 year old top on one of my cars, along with keeping the interiors and tires, including wide whites, looking good. Does not make the seats slippery and greasy like Armour All.
