I took the axle housing off, removed the drum with a home-made puller and removed the oil-soaked shoes. Would like some advice on re-installing the new shoes... the springs seem to be very difficult if not impossible to install once the shoes are in place. How do you guys do it? Also need a supplier for the AH633R oil seals which went bad. JD's Atlanta warehouse only has one. There is some play in the bearing cage, but not too bad.

It's been many years since I did one but I don't remember much of a problem once you get the drum pulled off. Make sure you put some sealer on the inside of that part that goes on the axle that the seal rides on.
I have automotive brake spring tools so maybe I used those ?
I also could have hooked the springs up first put one shoe in it's spot and then used a large screwdriver or pry bar to stretch the other into place.
You should be able to get oil seals from any seal supplier either by cross reference or measurements.

It will wet the shoes again if you don't adjust the axle bearings. Been a long time but sticks in my mind a pre load of .010 or maybe only .005" measured at the front & rear of the trumpet bell when attached with only the top bolt is what they want on the axles? I'd have to look it up to be certain!

Last time I was in there on our H was back in the early 80's & I installed a real thin cross sectioned O ring between the brake drum & the seal ring in addition to the sealer Mike mentioned. Don't know if it made a difference but the brakes still work.

I ordered seals from Charles Lindstrom this morning. He said there is an inner felt seal where you had put the o-ring. There was one in place when I removed the drum. It had formed itself to the spacer on one side and the splines of the drum on the other. Looked like it had been doing its job, as there was no oil leakage in that area. The stains on the rear end and bell suggested that the whole problem was the AH633R seal had failed. I will check the end-play on the axles as you suggested. Thanks.

My SIL is doing brakes on an H today, just tore it apart. I see a name where you ordered the seal, do you have a contact number for that? Thanks.

Charles Lindstrom is a retired gentleman in his 70's who loves the H model. He has any most any part you can imagine for an H. You can google his name and go to his site.
