My Farmall 300 exhaust smokes and the spark plugs fuel foul. The carb was recently rebuilt. I have a question regarding the initial setting of the "Main Fuel adjustment". Neither the shop manual or owners manual address the initial setting of the main metering needle valve. Both indicate that the valve can be used to reduce the amount of fuel going into the engine when under light load conditions. However, when heavy work is to be performed in which full power of the engine is required, the fuel adjusting screw should be set five turns off its seat.
Is there an initial setting for this valve and what is the adjustment procedure for light load use?

Thanks,
Don

5 turns out is just a ball park for it. All depends on where you live as to what else in or out it should be. But from what you say you need to turn it in a 1/2 turn at a time till you stop the fouling problem but still have the power you need

The initial setting is 3 turns out. 5 turns out is max. That tractor would have to be working its little heart out before you would need the full 5 turns. 3 turns will provide enough fuel for just about anything the tractor would ever have to do, including some very tough plowing.

Sounds to me like your float setting is too high. Five turns out or not it should not smoke. The jet on the 300 carb is really a fixed jet, but you can reduce the fuel consumption by turning the needle in. When I bought my Super H, I did not know that, as I hadn't read the manual. I rebuilt the carb and adjusted it as you do an H or M carb -- in until rough and out until smooth, plus maybe a fraction of a turn more. Any load or any incline, etc, the tractor cut out. That is when I read the manual. You set the screw 5 turns out initally, and then turn it in for light loads. As a kid I drove an H fully loaded, and I do mean loaded -- I would have loved to have had that Super H carb.

Thank you folks for the replys and suggested fixes. I will try them. The tractor has a Farmhand F-11 loader on it and is used for light utility work around the ranch. This is a great forum with so much talent sitting out there to draw from. Thanks to all.
