I have an LX 665 skid steer that the starter keeps cranking when the key is returned to off from the start position. I disconnect the battery cable, then touch it again and it keeps cranking. after a few times of retouching the cable to the battery, it stops. the ignition switch was pretty sloppy, and I thought that might be it, so I replaced it, same story. any ideas?

I agree with Rick, solenoid is sticking and needs taken apart, cleaned, lubed with TriFlo or other PTFE based dry lube. Or replaced. Jim

They say that the solenoid is inside the starter?

Test the starter before you remove it,look at the starter and you will find the main battery cable, near that you will find a single wire, that wire is the wire that excites and engages the starter when you hit start on the switch, disconnect the battery and disconnect that wire from the starter, make sure the machine is out of gear and the brake secure, switch on the key,use a jump wire from the battery cable to the light wire terminal on the starter, the engine will crank over and start, take the wire away,if starter does not stop it's got an issue if does stop the trouble is in the wiring, stop the engine, connect a test lamp to the light wire and the other end to a good ground, turn the switch to start, the test lamp will come on,let go of the key the test lamp should go out,if not there is an issue with the wiring, switch or relay it may have,if you need to replace the solenoid the starter will have to be removed, take it to auto electric repair shop where they will repair it for you as it is a reduction type starter.

Is it possible that mice could get In wiring and chewed them and wires are shorted causing starter to not stop turning

Thanks, that was my next course of action. I
checked the visible wiring outside of the
loom outer shield for melted or chewed
wires, and in the overhead panel, couldn't
find any. I'll dig into that after getting
the new glow plugs in.

solenoid is the silver cylinder mounted on top or beside the starter.

If it's the standard starter that's fitted it should be the reduction type, the solenoid is an integral part of the starter assembly and usually at the bottom, reading your first post again you say it stops running when you disconnect the battery thats why I think its an wiring issue,do the test I mentioned above to establish what's wrong.
