I have purchased a 1955 TO35 Ferguson tractor. It was not running and the owner had put in a new battery but couldn't get it started. What I have discovered is he installed a 12 volt battery, negative ground, but did not make any other changes. What may I expect to be damaged because of this?

Just curious, did the owner tell you he put in the wrong battery? Or just a casual observance?
Coil could be fried, VR probably needs polarizing again, That should be good for a start. Points might also be toasty. If the gen is shot, might be cheaper to do a conversion. Pull it out and get it bench tested.

It might have been converted to 12V

Don't run the starter for too long on 12 volts , a few starts at a time of three or four seconds each with a rest in between is all you should try .
Literally thousands of TEA20 Fergies with 6 volt systems run on 12 volts with very little trouble in Australia .

If your serial number is 161250 or higher it left the factory as a 12 volt with Neg. Ground. You can't just say all 1955 were 6 volt.

I have a 1955 TO35 and it came with the 12 volt system. I am sending a page from a 1954 Ferguson TO35 sales flyer
