Hello all. I'm in the process of dressing up my 450 and 460, and it's time to start putting things back more like factory, rather than so much baling wire and scotch tape:) So I'm replacing a bunch of the cage nuts that anchor the sheet metal in place, they are threaded for 5/16th inch coarse thread bolts. Caseih sells them, for about 10 bucks apiece plus shipping (ouch!), but Fastenal only wants about a buck fifty. Problem is, you have to order a box of 50! Anybody else have any luck finding these cage nuts for a reasonable price? I only need about 10 of them. Thanks, Hugh.

Minimum order of 6 but the price is right at $.35 a piece.

The original cage nuts have four wings. I have only been able to find replacement cage nuts with two wings. Anybody ever find a source for replacement four wing cage nuts???

I have seen them but they required to be "crimped" into place.

Sounds like you are all set. However: if something does not work out, try Mc Master Carr Supply. I think you find them on the internet.
Thanks

Those tractors used more than one style of cage nuts. Some were four corner retainer tabs that had to be crimped in place. Other was the two springy retainers BUT, they also came in different retainers for thick or thing metal they were hooked into. The farmall 400 used fine threaded nuts for all hoods, but course threaded up on the dash. Then some where along the 450, all went to course thread. Lots of cross threaded nuts in wrong places over the years. Fought enough of those hoods for years.

I really appreciate all the knowledgeable advice. I wondered if they hadn't made some changes to them, and it's good to find out now before I order parts:)

Call Pilot Knob at 815-777-0826. He has them at a great price and he also has a nylon washer to go under the screw to replace the star washers. These prevent the star washer from ruining the paint for the 450. He also has the other stuff for the 560. My last catalog has the cage nuts for $1.20 and the screws zinc coated for .70.

I re used most of the cage nuts on my 450 and the one I needed to replace I got from Fastenal. You don't have to buy in bulk at Fastenal you can order any number of cage nuts you want.I did away with the philips screws and used stainless steel bolts with stainless steel flat washers so not to scratch paint. I don't like philips headed screws as with age they become hard to get out. I used the stainless steel in both my Farmall 450 and AC WD45.

Thanks for the info, the guy I talked to at Fastenal was apparently "shooting from the hip" when he told me I had to order a minimum 50 of them. Now I can get my machine back together without breaking my piggy bank! Hugh
