Was cutting hay today with my 1086 and I got to thinking.
Tired of the negative talk on other forums about the 86 series IH.
Stupid doors(yes they r), t/a problems(if abused) electronic crap dash,
Etc etc.
I want all 86 series owners to post the amount of hours they have on
their tractors just so the truth may be told. I'll go first.

1086 with 11900hrs. May be 21900hrs. I'm not the original owner

Dad bought his new in 1981 with a 720 4-18 Auto Reset Plow and is pushing 12000 plus hours on original clutch, TA, and Engine. Something happened one fall plowing, and there was a little rear end work done. I get it the day it does not run and will completely go through it. We grew up RED but my brothers bled green for some reason, and the 1086 comes to the rescue every Fall when the Deere's keep gelling up in the field......which always makes me smile:)

well on the 86's that I have the 986 has 6200 apx hours and never rebuilt, the 1586 has a remain motor and about 6500 hours. I agree with the doors but still like them, not to many tractors that doesn't have some type of engineering flaw.

Curses to page load errors which caused my first response to disappear. Anyhow, I bought my 986 with 3300 hours and it now has 4926 hours on it. It's been a very good tractor with very little done to it besides regular maintenance. It does use a quart of engine oil per 15-18 hours of engine operation which I am told is acceptable given the hours and use. I like it enough to want to pretty it up with new paint and a better cab. As far as cabs go they all fade to junk if the cab in question has to sit outside along with the tractor it rests on. The park pawl is weak if the tractor needs to be parked on a significant grade. I've got a 720 5 X 16 spring reset plow that goes in back of it. I would not mind getting a 1086 along with a 475 disk. I know that the 56 and 66 series tractors are considered classics but I have little issue with the 86 series tractors and the left side shift never bothered me. The larger complaint I have is the three point lever and the remote lever are not in line for when I use the plow.

Son bought one about 4 years ago. Had 4850 hours on it. Its a 79 model. Now has around 5300 on it. Use it on the hay processer everyday in the winter feeding. First one ever owned. Seems to be a real good tractor. Had to add another step to the bottom end. Old man can't jump anymore. Getting in seems to be a little awkward if you are on the down hill side. Do like the hydraulic, levers that can be reach form the ground.

78 1086 bought new. Around 12,000 hours now. It has been set at 175 hp since new. One head gasket when the pump went bad. It was putting out over 250 hp (that was the limit on the dyno) buried the dyno and never slowed down.. Two TAs and clutches.4th set of rear tires. Engine has never been touched and uses one quart of oil every 150 hours.

1586 with approx 6000 hrs. Not the original owner, don't know if rebuilt...kinda doubt it. All the filters on it had dates written on them, speaks to good maintenance. Dont care about the doors, I like the tractor.

I bought a southern belle about a year ago and have slowly been fixing it up. The P.O. would jerry rig something instead of fixing it right. Tractor runs great and seems to have a lot of power. It's a 4 post.
