A friend of mine has a WC 148606 Which I figure is a 1946 model. What's odd about it is in place of a transmission disconnect a lever that's sticks almost straight up and has 3 positions with a gearbox on the bottom side, I think this is a Sherman overdrive, and the rearend has a plug in the very rear with the fill plug over to the left side. I have never seen one quite like this. The plug is about 3 inches in diameter. Have no pictures wouldn't be able to post them. Wonder if anybody has seen one like this |

It must likely is a Sherman two speed. It could either be a step up or a step down transmission. They made both. From the way it sounds its a later one. The first ones had a detent ball to on the lever but as they got used the springs got weak letting it pop out. The later ones had what I call a crowd foot pattern so it would stay in place. I own an example of both. As for the plug I have seen it on a few WC's. I'm not sure if you are familiar with 85-140 weight oil what the recommended for the rear end. It ain't to easy getting the slow running stuff in the fill. Lot of folks put that on there so it was easier to fill the rear end fluid. |

Sorry about that. I was mistaking about the rear end. I thought they put and extra piece on to fill it. That is a knock out I believe to get the bearings. And the small plug is what I was talking about is the fill plug |

Hi Fred, I used to own a WC which which fit this descriptoin, but does not look like the picture seen in this conversation. I was able to shift to a high or low for each gear, it also had a neutral position in the middle between high and low. Not sure if it was one there from new or if it was aftermarket add on. Guy bought it from me here in Illinois and took it hom e to New York, so I can't get you any pictures. Either way it was a really interesting option and is rare to see. |

I have a wartime WC, 1944, like that with the 3 position gearbox. Doesn"t know for sure how it works, until I do get it running, and shift it. |

Thanks guys for your info! I am working on a WC high crop and was going to ask what that box between the transmission and differential was all about! I think you may have answered it for me! Mine does have the vertical lever that looks like a hydraulic lever. Someone has mounted a hinge next to the lever which locks the lever midway! |
