did a stock 9n 1940-- # 30323 , use a .040 0r .090 sleeve for the block

If you are asking that question just for general information, someone who does know will be along soon w/ an answer.

If you are asking the question to order parts based upon the answer, then you will likely be in for a surprise. No telling what's in there now.

They only had the thin sleeve untill sometime in the 8N run.

Before and after the serial number, there should be a star that
indicates it came with .040 sleeves. Diamonds before and after
indicate .090 sleeves in the later 8N blocks.
Neither will tell what's in it now, nor that they will still fit.
Many were bored out for .090 sleeves or to run piston in block.

ALL FORD VEHICLES, including the 9N, 2N, and early 8N tractors, used the STAR (*) symbol in engine block serial number prefix and suffix designations. The star symbol denoted that steel cylinder liners (sleeves) were used. In early 1950, FORD then switched to cast iron sleeves and engine block serial numbers now used the <> Diamond symbol in the prefix and suffix of the s/n. An early N would have had the .040 sleeves, BUT, that is a moot point nowadays. You won't know what you have until you break down the engine and see for yourself, meaning DO NOT GO OUT AND BUY ANY NEW PARTS just yet if this the intent of your question. They do not make nor sell steel cylinder liners anymore so cast iron is the only option no matter what now. Get the block stripped and verify what you have first -chances are it has been rebuilt at least once in its life, maybe not, but don't guess.

From the factory it would have been .040 but that was 78 years ago and what is inside today is anybody's guess. You cannot rely on the serial number or any other factory marking after all of that time. In addition to engines that have had the OEM .040 wall sleeves upgraded to the .090 wall sleeves I've come across engines that had custom sleeves or no sleeves at all. The only way you can know for sure what is inside any of these engines is to disassemble and measure.
