we pulled the right side axle apart on my 53 NAA, splines are shot, hub is shot and the shims where in pieces. The axle nut was just a nut, no spring no slot and no key. the axle has no slot for a key or spring. is it possible they have been replaced once before?

It is, of course, possible, but more than likely, it is just worn out.

It is worn out. My question was why is it different than it should be. It doesn't really matter because I have to replace it I was just curious if anyone else has seen an axle like this.

What part of the world are you located in? I have an axle
here in central Michigan you could compare it to if you're close.

East coast is long. I might have one in NJ if you are near there.
