I don't really think there is a set shop time to R&R steering clutches except for warranty work when the machine was new. On a used machine there are too many variables(rusted,or broken bolts, tracks that won't easily come apart, bent linkages, previous owners patch jobs, worn or damaged bearing quills, etc. It's one of those things that if it takes 6 hours,or if it takes 15 hours you are going to pay shop labor rate for the repair.

You are correct on flat rate. Common sense has to prevail. We use flat rate manuals as a guide. There are just too many variables that come into play. We try to be fair to the customer, but we are not going to to do the job for free either. I had an old friend that said you can never loose money pricing your own labor. You may not make what you want per hour but you still won't be working for nothing. If you are paying an employee that is a different story.

We had to use flat-rate at our Deere dealership for warranty work. Otherwise - never. As the other poster mentioned - broken and stripped hardware is a huge issue. Especially with a 350C. Not as bad with a 450C since the final drives do not have to come off. In a best-case, I would expect 10-12 hours labor to do both sides.
