"Blow by" is just that. Blow-by of combustion gasses past the rings and into the crankcase. Good rings, and there is little or no air venting out the vent pipe. A little bit of smoke is OK. A lot signals worn rings and a worn engine.

You don't see this on a modern car, as the crankcase is vented into the intake of the engine, and re-burned.

I don't think the 8N's were equipped with anything Ford called an "air breather"

Some folks call the air intake stack or pre-cleaner or oil bath air cleaner the "air breather".

If you have a leaking intake valve, it's possible to get some spitting of oil back in that area.

Or, are you calling the oil filter cap/crankcase breather the "air breather"???

I fugure blow-by cost me about 500 bucks on the sale of a tractor one time. IH 504 diesel with loader, it ran and started OK, and didn't have noticeable blow-by at normal speeds. But the moron who drove it by the auction stands had it at full throttle on a dry day, and the downward pointing blow-by tube kicked up so much dust you could hardly see. Guys in the stands were laughing, it ended up bringing 1500 instead of the 2000 I expected.

From your experience I have learned something; Its my tractor until the auctioneer says sold. So I'll be the one starting it and driving it or working the hydraulics etc prior to the bidding. We do live and learn. gobble

Problem with that is, if you're driving it, you can't bid on it to protect it. My auctioneer won't take a reserve price, seller can bid it up if he wants to protect it. Buyback fee is $100. I let it go, didn't want to deal with it any more.
