I will finish my restoration on my grandfathers farmall H in april. I still have to do tires and tin work but I am confused on the paint. It is a 1950 farmall H and I understand that that paint is not available. So there is IH 50 and IH 2150. I am going to have it professionaly painted with automotive paint and would like your opinion on what paint looks better. With all the discussion on the internet I am not sure what way to go. Also the paint codes with dupont or ppg sometimes have extra letters. What do these mean? Are they variances in the paint color. do I need them? I really appreciate all your help on this. I just don"t want to make a mistake at this pint in the game. I need to have this done before my wedding in June.

Whats wrong with the 2150 ? I always thought it WAS the correct color , and even if not , who could fault you ? But in any event it's your tractor , use the shade that pleases you. All of my IH stuff is Rustolium Red , suits me just fine.

Close to 50 or 2150? Or 1102B (or whatever it is) like the tractor should be?

Not being one to care about the correct police , when i did my S/MTA it was 2150 that got shot on it with a dab of DuPont 77 S hardner and applied in 6 or was it 7 light coats allowing flash time between each coat on a day not best suited for painting as it was pouring rain outside and the building was vary damp BUT NO BUGS . That paint job took a RAG and made it a show tractor . That was back in 1990 and even after planting beans many tractor pulls lots of road mile on and off the trailer many paraids mowing and baling hay she still looked good enough to be chosen for the 94 Red Power Video out of fiftytwo other S/MTA's there . Now twentythree years later NOW she needs a refresh. Spent tomany days in the hot sun .

Jim
IH #50 is the correct color for your "H". The color of the IH red did not change until the 460-560 series in 1958, witch it went to the 1102b and the 201, witch are no longer available. The IH # 2150 did not change form the #50 color until 1962 on the other IH model tractors.
PPG concept single stage paint is all that I use and is VERY nice. It is expensive but worth it and is very easy to work with.

I think Fay's originality guide lists the change to 1102B in 50 or 51. I know my 51 WD-9 is supposed to be 1102B, but nobody can give me a code for it.

I use Dupont 7140A. The 2150 is OK but a little to light for me. The 7140A is a little deeper red, not much.

I have not used DuPont, but the "correct" cross to 2150 is DuPont 96766, no idea how it compares to 7140.

50 went to 1102b in mid 1949, 201 came when the 460 and 560 were introduced in 1958, 2150 came in 1961 when I think the 240-up were introduced. Point is all those colors have changed since their inital colors due to the EPA's enviornmental concerns. So the only choices now are the PPG/DuPont 50 and 2150 colors, plus the CaseIH 2150. I believe that all IH letter/hundred series were "supposed" to change color at the same time, not that it matters. I use PPG Omni base-clear. Concept is more expensive because the colors are perhaps a little more accurate and are somewhat thicker and can cover in in fewer coats with expert painters, which I am not. I use 3 coats base and 3 coats clear.

I used PPG's Omni paint code 71310 on my Troy Bilt tiller in 2006. I also used their hardener.
Still looks good. Hal
