Can anyone advise? My 1940 9N has started "knocking" when the hydraulic lever is at the top. I presume this is the hydraulic pump telling me it needs attention.
It's also developed a problem with "lifting" when the system is under load, in that it doesn't always "lift" when the lever is moved to the top position, and of course this is getting worse. So the issue is there may be a worn hydraulic cylinder o-ring - or could it be the relief valve?
It seems the symptoms of the problem "lifting" could be either.
If anyone has a suggestion for the cures, I'd be grateful.

Knocking indicates wear but some knock is not uncommon and won't hurt anything unless it gets really bad..Other problems you describe-remove the side cover at your right heel, lift something, look in to see where it is leaking..report back.

when you lift hte linkage, with the cover off, is the fork moving the control valve in the pump?

If the cylinder seal (either o-ring or metal rings) is leaking the lift will not stay up after the cluth pedal is depressed.

As others have suggested you should pull the inspection cover and see what is going on. My guess is that you have sticky valves in the pump chambers. I have essentially the same problem with mine and I have traced the problem there.

I am too cheap to pull the pump and rebuild it so I am just putting up with the intermittent performance issues.
