I found a 39 Farmall M for sale, no tag, the only cast date
I could read had 7-31-I on the right rearend housing.
Other casting dates I could partially read also had a 7.

Does anyone have a range of when this tractor was
made?

The real low serial number 39"s had no tag. I"m not sure when they started putting serial number tags on them. I have serial number 782 and it has a tag. So, somewhere between 501 and 782 they started putting tags on them! There should be a serial number on the right frame rail below the magneto. As for build date I really can"t help you. I"m sure someone who knows more than me will chime in!

Yes, "I" would be 1939

It sounds like he's more looking for a month and day when the tractor was built...

I was able to find some information on the Wisconsin Historical Society's website, some build ledgers that showed production information for various tractors. That got me down to the month on some of my collection...

The letter "I" designates the year 1939, so the casting code you found indicates a date of July, 31, 1939. Doesn't necessarily mean the entire tractor was built on that date, it only means that particular part was cast on that date. If the engine is original to the tractor, the engine serial number would be the same as the chassis serial number.

Wouldn't November 1st be the beginning of the 1940 model production?
