So a friend of mine brought over a Case 885 3 cyl diesel. It has a 3 speed gear box with L, LS H,HS. He wants me to check it out. I can not get the Pto to engage or the 3 point to lift. I plane on getting a manual for this asap. It has the 2 speed pto 540 rpm and 1000rpm. I am wondering if this is a common problem or if the 2 are related. this is the first case i have worked on and much newer than anything i own. So i will need all the help i can get.

That is an 885N(N for narrow), much less common than your run of the mill 885. The only common factors which can stop both the PTO and hydraulics would be the PTO clutch, cardan shaft, or the gears at the rear of the cardan which run the PTO and hydraulic pump(in the PTO housing).

As for common problems, the 3 point can be problematic if not maintained, filters, oil changes, water in it, etc...

The 2 speed PTO is generally indestructible unless abused(not using the clutch to engage it).

The last of the 885 series was 11021851, completed in 1983. I suspect that one is a late 82 to 83 somewhere, but don't have a reliable source with exact dates, just start and stop of the series. There is a guy over on the dbtc.co.uk forum that can give you exact day and shift of manufacture.

Rich, are they like the 995 with the rear hyd pumps and have the spur gear driving things? I had a 995 in that the spur gear would work loose and come off, was a easy fix om it just pulled the pto off cleaned things up good and lock-tited the retainer still working fine after 15 years as far as I know cnt

I have a Case 380CK/885 with S/N 885/41/110 20 805 and was told it is a 1981. Don't know if this helps you or not. As stated above, they do not like dirty hyd oil. Dennis

Ok why i was messing around with it engine off i turned the pto by hand and the 3 point went right up. I had the shift levers out and was trying to see if any thing was turning in the gear box. Does that narrow it down to shaft or clutch.

If it's set up like the 990, and I think it is, it's probably like CN1660 said, the drive gear is loose. It's a pretty easy job to pull the pto assy off. The gear drives the pto and hyd pump. You ahve to be careful putting it back on to get all the gears properly engaged, been there, done that, got the tee shirt. Still have the chipped gear someplace!

The best manual is the DB/Case shop manual. Expensive though.

Identical.

If you pull the top link sensing unit off, you might be able to see what is happening(six 1/2" bolts).

If you can't see what is happening through that hole, pulling the PTO unit off would be your next course of action(large circle of bolts that bolt to the differential housing).

It is the pto clutch. Every thing in the back end of the tractor is good and clean. With the pto unit off i can turn the shaft by hand and it has nothing. So where do i find a clutch for this. I guess now i need to price parts and let the owner know what he is going to be into it for. This is a picture of the shaft end that goes into the clutch.

The shaft looks usable, but has a lot more wear on the splines than I would have expected. The front end is supposed to look like that, that is where it goes into the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft.

A&I(Deere) offers the clutch parts reasonably, I have had good luck with them. Sparex does too.

Next step is to split it and see exactly what is wrong in the clutch pack. It is pretty straight forward to split. Best case, and it is just the front clutch disc has sheared its rivets or splines. Aftermarket discs are about $100. I'd probably do the back disc(if showing wear, another $100) and throwout bearing($60) if I were doing it for myself.

Another thought before you go tearing into it... Does it have a very distinct 2nd stage when you push the clutch pedal half way down? Slide the cardan shaft back in before you try it. It could be wildly out of adjustment and running on the throw out bearing. The clutch pedal should have at least 1/4" or so of free play before you start into the springs.

I called local dealer and he can get the PTO friction plate for $154 and Tractor clutch for $183. I will split tractor tomorrow, I have fuel tank and every thing else removed and set aside. I need to remove the power steering lines Then unbolt and roll apart. I have the back have blocked up and will use a engine hoist to move the front half away. This is actually still a simple tractor to work on. I ordered the manual for it but i might have it back together before it arrives.

I want to thank you all for the help and advice. And will keep you updated to what i find when i split the case.
