I've got a MF470 shovel loader with a 236 perkins we rebuilt. It has an electric fuel pump on it and as near as I can tell we have all the air out of the system. There are two bleed screws on the side of the pump body and fuel pours out of them with no sign of air yet there is nothing coming out of the injector lines? We had it running very briefly (20 seconds) before we took the engine out 6 months ago so I wouldn't think anything would have got gummed up or anything. Turned out cylinder 4 piston got melted and scored up likely from a bad injector. Had them rebuilt and the shop said they were in pretty bad shape so I'm just thinking the pump likely maybe as well or if there is still a bit of air in it I can't get out? Pump was never removed so it shouldn't be a timing issue. Little reluctant to use ether on it to get it going. Ideas anyone?

If it has not run for awhile metering valve and/or plungers may be stuck in hydraulic head. Generally need a complete tear down, clean and reseal. Just repaired one for the same trouble.

Lot of hours on it. Guess it maybe time. Few places offering rebuilt pumps for around 650 or so which doesnt seem to bad as long as its actually rebuilt and not just had a seal replaced. Where did you send yours out to?

Im not a diesel mechanic or close to it, but did service a lot of 236 perkins, had same problem, replaced pump, worked better but would run randomly, some days all day, other times only 1 minute, found that when I replaced fuel filter I forgot or left an old seal in the filter housing, was hard to see and never even thought that as a problem, until I looked with a flashlight into the housing, was about 5 years ago, but replaced filter with correct amount of rings and or correct type, hard to remember, but have never had a problem since then..Maybe something to check..

All this info is from my memory which isnt very good any more..

Good Luck,
Tim

Just had the one done on my 236 last month. Rebuild pump was $540 and test and rebuild injectors with new nozzles was $310. This is in SE Wisconsin. Dennis

No, don't resort to the ether just yet.
I know Dieseltech is going to cruel me, but, try tapping the side of the injector pump with end of a hammer handle....VERY GENTLY! If the metering valve has stuck from standing, it may well free up. Repeat the process if necessary after cranking the engine a few times.
It's not the correct fix for an injector pump problem like yours, but I have done this on many engines with eons of hours on them, and can prolong the time before you will need to overhaul of the pump.
Evan.

I did tap it a bit, I take it thats a no no? Little more air came out of the metering cover bleeding vent but it still doesn't put out much. Number two shoots out 1/2" maybe and the other three basically dribbles and spits a bit. Dieseltech where are you located and what's your email? I'd call but can't really hear worth a @#$! anymore. Guess my 470 ain't the only thing getting old. Wishing I was in SE Wisconsin thats a really good deal compared to around here closest diesel shop around here is over two hours away. Had one in town here but their pump guy passed away. Now they just send everything out.
