I broke axle while plowing. Jacked tractor up and right wheel spins freely and brake won't stop rotation. It is a 1950 row crop. how big a job will the repair be? anybody in mid-atlantic have n.o.s. axle?

I'am not saying you didn't,but I don't believe you have.IF you have a LPTO tractor with the hand clutch,I would be checking your right pinion(brake) shaft, because they can and do shed their teeth, which will do what you are saying.Good luck in what ever you find.Report back.

This tractor does not have LPTO. The brake would slide tire, Now the wheel spins freely and the brake does not stop it.

I thought if wheel spins freely and brake won't stop it, it has to be axle?

If you do have a broken axle, please post pictures if you can. Probably the worst part of the job will be removing the hub from the axle. The axle-housing assembly is probably close to 200lbs (bull gear 50ish) so a hoist or a couple friends comes in handy. You will need 13-14 gal of gear oil to fill it back up after you drain the transmission to clean out any grindings.

We have a 444 that is on about it"s 5th axle. We had a mounted corn picker on it and that is why they would break. Brother and Dad would always change them in the field where it broke and remember it was only a couple hours and it was up and running again. We had a couple old 44"s in the trees and they would use one of those.

I know for a fact this tractor was used with mounted picker on it. That may have weakened it. Thanks
