Was planning on going out this morning, dragging the garden and planting 5 or 6 150 foot rows of sweetcorn. Got as far as buying the seed. Rasin, sleet, snow, temps in the low 40's and winds to 30 mph. A most uncomfortable afternoon for such activities. Forecasting a hard frost overnight. Hope it doesn't hurt the fruit trees. Last year we took a real beating. Covered up the asparagras and rhubarb already. Think I'll put off the first sweet corn planting for a day or so.

I wokeup to a white ground. Had 2 inches or so and it has snowed off and on all day. Glad I cover up the plants in the garden last night. Liac bush was loaded with blossoms but after tonight they will be gone for another year.

That weather sounds rough. Present temp in SC at 5.43 PM is 77, but they are forecasting lows in the mid 40s Monday night, high 72.

I know. I did a small job fixing a tractor. Went up in a field that's going to corn and dug out a couple of big dead head rocks that have been plaguing me for years. Put that FWA tractor to the test. Wasn't too bad while I was there, they were sticking out of a sidehill kinda out of the wind, but it was a cold ride coming and going.

This is the first year in a long time I didn't plant sweet corn. Just not enough moisture this year. Stan

Neighbor west of me dragged his 20 or so acre corn field today, in preparation for planting. Open station tractor. Betcha he was one cold dude in spite of his carharts. He's a weekend farmer (lives elsewhere), has to get it done on the weekends, or take time off work.

Planted more sweet corn than I ever have this spring. It's the first corn I plant so I don't have to clean out the planter units after planting field corn. planted 8 rows maybe 200 feet long. Jim

It is about 55 here in southern Illinois. I have planted 4 rows about 150 ft long. It is about 1 in tall, and looks like it is shivering. Planted RR and Bt. this year. should be able to keep it clean and not have a worm in every ear. Hope it tastes good. Came from Beck's seed co.

Most hobby sweet corn farmers here plant three times, two weeks apart.
I shoot for 8 rows, 40 plants each time for a season 80 dozen ears. That takes care of me and the friends and neighbors.
Seed and pesticide dealer always gets the choice ears in return for free seed.

I plowed my garden tonight and now, unfortunately, I am done plowing until fall. I debated just discing the garden but the grass and weeds had a good start and I didn"t think discing would get it all under. Tomorrow I"ll spread fert and get started. Normally, I"m thinking about picking snow peas but this year everything is so late. I"ll do a patch of peas in the fall.
