Hi, I have a Massey Ferguson TEA 20 or 24 I am not
sure. I have a problem with the gears. I am able to
get the lever into 1,2,3,4 but it will not engage
into S (start) or R (reverse) and appears to be very
solidly locked. I have removed the gear stick and
can move the other gears (1,2,3,4) with a screw
driver but not S or R. Does anyone have any
suggestions? It was working fine the other week. I
have been told it could be the selecta rod? Thanks

chances are it is the rod your gonna have to remove the steering column to have access and see what is keeping the shift rails forks from moving.

Trac might be right, but first I'd-carefully- remove the starter button, just incase that is jamming the shaft's movement. Maybe just lifting the steering housing high enough to poke around in there? - careful it don't FALL on your fingers...

Easier way to remove a TE20 steering box

Hi Charles, that is a great help thanks, I have just started taking everything from behind the dash off to try and remove the whole steering part. I will stop now and go the way you have shown. It is great having guys like you to help out on these forums. Is there anything I should know or do inparticular when the cover is off. Thanks again

Thanks for the reply. After I have taken the cover off and fixed the rail issue with the gears is there anything in there under the cover in with the gears which would be worth replacing whilst it is all off and easy to get at? Thanks again

If you do not find the problem with the steering box off, it may be the bullet affair at the back of the selector rods...the thing that keeps you from selecting two gears at once. Also.....sometimes these selector rods'freeze' into the alloy casting due to some sort of reaction, but they have to sit for some time for that to happen.

Thanks for the reply will look into that. I left another question for Charles who was a great help askng did he think there was anything in the gear box that I should change while I have the cover off other than the gear selector problem? Thanks

Samm i was thinking the same thing must be froze up some how rust or just jammed up somehow?

Hi, I have the casing off and cant see anything obvious, the rods look ok. I can move the right hand one but the 2 others are pretty solidly locked. I am now trying to take the cover off under the seat. I have taken all the bolts off but is pretty stuck and does not want to come off. Is there any key to getting it off? What should I be looking at where the gears are? I take it the selector rods are the silver rods which the gears are on and they slide back and forth. It may become apparent what the problem is after I get the cover off which is under the seat at the back? Check out the colour of the oil, like milk...

I cannot offer any help for your shifting problem but I can say that there is nothing under the rear lift cover related to the transmission. You will create more problems than you solve by removing it.

For one thing, you seem to have very watery oil in there. It needs to be changed. With it drained out you can see what's going on with the reverse shift fork.

Are you sure that all three shift rods are moved to the center position? You may need to jack up one rear wheel and wiggle it to help get the gears unbound.

You shouldn't have removed the four bolts in the center of the rear lift cover. They hold the hydraulic cylinder in place. I don't know if your TEA20 uses an O-ring or gaskets to seal the cylinder against the top cover but either way that connection has been disturbed and you really should have the cover off to be sure you reinstall the cylinder correctly or you will have a leak. The control valve will need to be disconnected from the top cover before you lift it off or you will break the control valve in the pump. If you don't have one already you should get a service book before you go much further.

I would drain that milky oil out and with the top cover off you will be able to do a really good cleaning.
