I have a craftsman wheeled weed trimmer with a tecumseh engine that is giving problems. The engine is a 6.5hp, model 143.996516, type wtpxs.1951ba. It starts and seems to run fine. Today, I checked the oil,(full) and my son used it about an hour and he said all at once it started smoking badly, so he turned it off. I checked oil, and could not get any on stick. I filled it again, and it started right up, with no smoke. I can loosen the dipstick cap while it is running and it will start smoking and cutting out. i can tighten cap and it smoothes out and stops smoking. I am not familiar with these engines so any help is appreciated. Is maybe the crankcase breather(if it has one) plugged up, or do i have internal problems?

Broken ring. If you check oil when hot, you won"t see it on the dipstick,it will run right off

Check crankcase breather, same located on top rear side of block, you'll have to remove flywheel cover & possibly flywheel also to get to breather, check that filter element in same clean(can be washed out with carb cleaner/gas if needed)check that drain hole(s) in breather valve body not plugged up,check that check valve in breather assembly not sticking/stuck open or dirty/gummed up.If air filter assembly has oil in it or filter element oil soaked, replace air filter element AFTER checking breather valve.

I will check breather. I filled with oil after this all happened and used it again pretty hard for a while, and ran fine with no smoking at all, and normal power, and no oil usage. where my son was using it at was pretty steep, and i am thinking he may have turned it over not telling me and the oil got dumped in the top of motor thus all the smoke all at once. as i say, it is doing fine now, no smoking at all. i am still going to check the crankcase breather tho just in case. thanks for the input!
