I was thinking of replacing my tired old NH 489. Don't know if I should get another 489 or if I should try something different? I don't want a discbine. I saw a JD 820 for sale. Are they any good? Will they cut as good as a New Holland haybine? Anybody have any experience with this haybine?

I"ve had a JD 720 haybine for about 5 years, and am very happy with it. I"m not too sure the differences between the 720 and the 820. On my 720, the teeth are easy to change as they come up individually with a 7/16" wrench, so no rivets to pound out like the old style. I bought the manual from ebay just to have. I don"t plan on getting rid of this haybine anytime soon.

Hope this helps

Don't know the model, but my BIL had a JD with a auger in the head that caused a lot of problem in tall wet hay because of wrapping. Finally broke the auger and got rid of it.

The JD 820 was the last JD sickle mower conditioner they made themselves. The JD 820 was a great mower. They did several improvements to it over the JD 1219 it replaced. The biggest being the plate behind the sickle was shorter so the hay was up into the conditioning rolls faster. With good anti clog guards you could almost mow with the disk mowers.

JD ran the old designed JD 1209/1219 mower too long. They did not re-design the sickle mowers until the disk mowers had already taken over the hay mowing market. So when they did not sell thousands of them the corporate bean counters stopped production.

The only JD sickle mower conditioner sold today is a repainted model under the Frontier name. I think they are a MacDon machine.
