the spot on the left side of my engine block where the serial number is supposed to appear on my 8N is really worn down. Is there any other way to tell what year it is? It has a side mount distributor so I am thinking perhaps it's a 50's+ model?

Side mounts came out in April or May of 1950 and ran till 1952 when the last 8N was built. It is said that there is a casing date under the rear end but to see it you have to crawl under the tractor

Angst.........does it really matter? Iff'n yer a sphincterly challenged originality inspector, all you need to do is check yer flatplate hydraulic pump for a build date. That will be very close to yer engine build date. ........HTH, Dell the non-inspector
