my cheap ratty-but-runs-OK 8N didn't have an air cleaner when I got it. I found a slipon K&N filter that fits (meant for a valve cover crankcase vent) but it gets dusted out darn fast and I've never thought K&N's did a very good job of filtering. in the summer my land gets mighty dusty when I'm tractoring (primarily brush clearing)

what cheap alternative sorts of air cleaners do y'all use?

why not just get a salvage air cleaner.. they ar eout there repop and used...

for about 110$ you can get a cleaner, tube and the rubber hose pieces. add in a few hose clamps and you are good to go.. clean air for the tractor..

I should add, the front loader on my 8N seems like it would get in the way of any OE style external air cleaner, unless those fit entirely inside the envelope of the cowl (not having seen one up close, I'm not sure how exactly they fit on).

there IS some sort of horn shaped thing on the outside of the right rear of the cowl, the bottom is just open. is that the original intake, and the cleaner fits into the bottom of that or something?

i'm looking at the parts catalog, its not much help. studying random google's pictures of 8N's, it does seem like that tall red can air filter somehow fits behind that horn, but I don't see how the air gets from the horn to the filter. ok, this 'horn' thing is just like the one on this tractor,
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/85/Ford_8N.jpg

and in some other pictures I see what looks like a jar hanging off the bottom of that?

I have several N series parts tractors. I can ship you a complete original filter assembly that goes under the hood and will not interfere with your loader. $50 shipped to your door.

that external piece is something like a cyclone or other external pre-settling fitler. the canister in red under the hood is the oe cleaner.. it normally just has a grill and screen behind that.. flush mor eor less with the outside of the hood...

I've also got one if ya need. If you want one correct to your tractor do ya need the cupped bottom one or the flat bottom air cleaner. I can't see why it would interfere with the loader even with the cyclone jar on the opposite side of the hood.

Here's an example of the air cleaner.
Fits under the hood as souNdguy said, the hole in the front here
would fit to the screen, or to your external pre-cleaner funnel.
The tube to the right fits to a curved pipe that attaches to the carb.
There are two short pieces of radiator hose at each end of that
curved tube to make the attachments to carb and cannister.
I got this one from forum member Jim.UT webbtractor@gmail.com

I have three air cleaners that are going to the scrapper soon.

I also have two tubes to connect to the carb.

Let me know if you are interested.

so what, that missing jar under the cyclone was a water bubbler or something? it catches the bulk dust and is easy to clean frequently?

I don't use cheap alternatives. Go to ebay and
plug in 'ford tractor air cleaner' and you'll get
a list that has about a half dozen 8N air cleaners
mostly used, some restored, and one or two new.
The one Royse shows is the UNITED style with the
rounded cup. DONALDSON, with the square cup, was
used in '48 and after '49. The unit contains a
wire mesh screen that can be easily removed and
cleaned or replaced new. Simple. HINT: when
working with the air cleaner and carb, use a lot
of WD-40 around and inside the two rubber hose
connections to help the rubber become more pliable
and easier to maneuver off and on the tube and
carb inlet. Pry the hose end sup slightly with a
screwdriver and get the spray inside and around
the perimeter of the steel tube and carb inlet.
Use caution and patience so you don't rip the
rubber hose. Then you'll need to buy new hoses.
