How do I adjust from category 2 to category 1 on my 170? The book says there is a kit that can be bought. Any suggestions?

Most tractor dealers would have a bushing kit for CAT II to CAT I which is a set of bushings that has inside diameter (id) of Cat I and an outside diamter(od)of Cat II. Use the CAT I hitch pins and slide the bushings into the CAT II sleeve. This is for all tractors.


CAT I
Top Link Pins are 3/4 inch in Diameter & decimal is 0.75 inch
Lift Arm Pins are 7/8 inch in Diameter & decimal is .875 inch.
CAT II Top Link Pins are 1 inch in Diameter & decimal is of course 1.0 inch.
Lift Arm Pins are 1 and 1/8 inch in Diameter & decimal is 1.125 inch.

Alternative 2 is not pretty, requires machining/grinding and still leaves some slack.

For a top link bushing:
SCH 40 Steel Pipe of inch (.75 decimal inch) is 1.05"od and 0.82"id; so you'll machine off nearly 3/64 from the od, you'll have one home made top link bushing and inside will have some slack.
If you find SCH 80 steel pipe inch (.75 decimal inch) it has the same 1.05" od and 0.74" id. Machine to fit od and the id.
Arm Lifts bushings:
SCH 40 steel pipe of 1" is 1.32 od - 1.05 id
SCH 80 steel pipe of 1" is 1.32 od - 0.96 id
Machine the outside to 1.125" - nearly 13/64 and inside of SCH 80 pipe 3/64.

Never mind about Alternative 2. go find the bushing kit at a dealer.

Bushings for the lift arm and top link pins are cheap and easy to find at your local farm store or on-line.

The issue is that if you have factory mounted sway blocks on the 170 they are 99.9999% of time Category 2 blocks and you cannot get the lift arms close enough together to mount a category 1 implement. You have to remove at least one sway block to do that and then you don't have proper sway control thru the entire lift range with a sway block removed.

Allis made Cat 1 sway blocks but they are VERY VERY hard to find as they haven't been made in decades and nobody is reproducing them yet aftermarket like the Cat 2 sway blocks. If you find just one Cat 1 sway block I believe you can mount a Cat 1 implement with it but there is not much "sway".

Adding to Skyhighballoon's comments- take the cat. II sway blocks right off. (They could be mounted different ways for cat. II operation)
A good piece of hard wood will make you whatever size block you want!

I've owned a 175 since 1980. I bought it with Cat 2 sway blocks and purchased cat 1 block a few months later to handle a cat 1 plow. I would check with a reputable AGCO dealer, who was an Allis Chalmers Dealer... might find some NOS parts. You actually can make them ... just follow the line of the casting... they don't bump out like the cat 2 blocks do..

What happens when the arms are lifted past and above the sway blocks? Wont they spread out again?

As Longmeadow says- I believe the original cat. I blocks just filled out that lower "cut in portion". So, with the cat. II blocks removed, I think the wider part of the frame, where the arms will hit when raised, is the correct width for cat. I.
