well... my 1948 ratty 8N had no air cleaner when I got it, so as a temporary hack I stuck a K&N crankcase vent cover filter over the carb, this actually works pretty well, but geez it fills up fast with dust. 6 or 8 hours of field whacking and its time for a cleaning, which is a pain (gotta wash in hot soapy water, then thoroughly rinse, then dry, then re-oil)

so I ordered the OE style air cleaner and pipe and stuff from YT, which arrived today.

arrgh, now I know why the OE cleaner wasn't on there... this 8N has a front loader, and someone put a square beam crossbar just behind the engine block to brace it. the stock position air cleaner would run right into this. that and there's some ugly welds on the side of the battery box where the air cleaner would normally be screwed on....

so now what to do? I'm thinking, maybe cut the S pipe, and extend it with some rubber hose so the pipe sticks up above the cowl (with a new hole cut for it), and put a 1.5" to some bigger size adapter on the end, and get one of those 'cold air' turbo air filters like the ricer-boys use, and stick that out in the open air? maybe put a snorkel shield around it to try and keep the dust out?

I can't see what you can, but I would try to find some way to mount
the original (you paid for it!) then run a rubber hose from it to the carb.
It doesn't have to look factory, it just needs to keep dirt out of your engine!

I took out the funky old votlage regulator this evening, it had been hacked out of the circuit and left with its wires hanging there. that opens up a little more room

the oil gauge pressure line is kinda in the way, as is the throttle mech, but I might be able to work around those. its gotta be vertical, and I have to have room to work the clamps so I can change the oil (is 30W and/or 20W50 ok to use in these? i haven't had a vehicle with an oil bath air cleaner in a long long time)

this crossbrace thats in the way is made from two C channel beams that are fitted together and welded into a box, about 2x4", across the top of the transmission right behind the engine flange. it sticks out directly under the two horizontal pipes of the front loader, which are double-ubolted to it.

I need to take photos of this, I guess.

Any where you can mount it vertical, put a screen over the intake, and hose it to the carb
will work.

hmm, I suppose I could use that corrugated bendy radiator hose stuff for this, I bet that comes in 1.5" ...

I'm wondering if maybe I can mount it to the front loader frame, perhaps via a board.

(goes outside at 11pm with his led head-lamp on and checks it out again)...

dayung. the place it was supposed to be really is the only place it fits, except this crossbeam runs into it.. farther back runs into the steering gear. outboard, it runs into the front loader. I could mount it up on top o the hood on the inner side of the fixed frame of the front loader. uhgleeee.

get some rad flex tube and some scrap metal. make a brackets SOMEWHERE close. hang the cleaner in an easy to get to place. maybee on the laoder frame.. or hood side like adiesel air cleaner. then use the flex hose and SS tube to mate it all up..

hood side is out as the loader frame is too close. about the only place I can find where it can be mounted vertically with sufficient clearance to change the cup on the bottom would be up on the top side, inside the big 'loops' on the loader frame. this would put the air intake at face level.

so, I'm thinking I'll use the stock air 'S' pipe to bring the air up to where its supposed to be, then use flexihose from there up to this high mounted cleaner, which will be flipped around the other way so the output is pointed backwards. I think thats better than trying to use flexihose all the way from the carb? with the air cleaner mounted up there on the inside of the loader frame, the intake opening will be pointing towards the middle.

Why did your loader need a square beam crossbar to brace it?
You have the same loader I do and my air cleaner is in there just
like it is suppose to be.

i got it this way a few weeks ago. this tractor is pretty beat up but runs adequately. there's repair welds on the back end of the loader frame, I think the center beam is there to help brace it.

Good deal, now you have a working air cleaner that you
can service fairly easily. Not the prettiest, but functional!
