I am an old Ford guy, have 8 of them, but am working on an IH 1978 Cub for a friend. Since you all have always been very helpful before on questions related to my Fords, thought you might be able to assist on this one.

Tractor sat for 10 years but I finally got it running, the only problem is the hydraulic system. When the tractor is cold, as in early morning, the hydraulic lift works fine. BUT when the tractor warms up, even when just sitting in the sun, the system does not move.

I use the recommend Hy-Tran fluid, which is the Hydr-Transmission fluid from Tractor Supply.

Question - would like to use a heavier fluid, which would you recommend?????? Have come to the conclusion that since it works when it is cool and does not when warm, that maybe a thicker oil will work better.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. David

My conclusion is the system is worn and needs service. Heavier oil is just a bandaid to prolong your agony.

Saw a discussion of oil for Cubs on one of the Cub forums and the concensus was to use the Hy-Tran or equivalent. They indicated that something heavier would likely damage the system. Sounds like there's a re-build in your near future.
