As I work toward finishing off our 14x14 cabin (with 10x14 upstairs), we are giving more thought to a composting toilet. I have a 60 amp sub panel out there, so there will be plenty of electricity, but plumbing is just not an option...and neither is Lyle's outhouse.

That said, do any of you have experience with composting toilets? Cabin will be used by my wife & I intermitenty.

Thank you,
Glenn F.

They work good for that application but not so good for high volume use.

I can't speak for composting toilets but I can speak for "Incinolet" incinerating toilets. We had one in a Mine (1200 ft. underground) that I worked in. It had been set up near the underground maintenance shop, and every time someone used it we immediately knew, as the smell of burning feces would enter the shop - a very strong pervasive smell.

If you do decide to go with an incinerating toilet, set it up at least a mile from your cabin.

Years ago, I had an office trailer with a "chemical" toilet. It worked fine, but it required more attention than the "flush and walk away" type that we are used to today. There was a blue liquid that had to be topped off occasionally. I have no idea what the maintenance/operating costs were - it was a bid item on a highway contract, and it was "furnished" at the lowest bid.

They work and don't stink according to the wife. Use the correct toilet paper.

It looks like they run around $1500. Guess I better start saving up.
