My tractor is a 1959 Dexta with live PTO. When I pulled the transmission to replace it (excessive wear & Bearing failure), there is differences to the old and new transmission. The new replacement transmission is from a 1960 Dexta, with live PTO. First the output shaft is different. My coupler shaft will not fit the newer transmission. Also, the newer transmssion does not have the drive gears for the hydraulic pump. Can I swap the parts from my old transmission?

The images are from Steffans website. I have not torn my transmissions apart.

You can swap both parts.

The later shaft is for Dexta/Super Dexta and is heavier duty but to use it you would need to swap the crown wheel and pinion too.

Later shaft was fitted after July 1962, the introduction of the Super Dexta.

Thanks Majorman,
I need to just take the hydraulic drive gear assembly off, remove the top and swap out the shaft gear cluster?

According to the parts book which gives a list of the parts required you need the shaft, the gear coupler and the main shaft with gear to match the coupler. All these should be in your spare gearbox.

You said on fordsontractorpages that you have the complete gearbox and back end, this would be the other way to go.

Dextas did get a gear ratio change in August 1960 as well as the uprated gearbox in 1962. Either your spare gearbox has been fitted with the later shaft or it is the uprated version. Your rear axle would have the big nut rather than the heat shrink bearing and seal retainer and also a locking dif. if it is the later type.

Majorman,
I have decided to convert my 59 Dexta to a Super Dexta. Either way, I need to take the slop out of my Hyd top linkages, replace bearing & seals on my axles and brake pads.
The only problem with the parts super rear end is the PTO (looked like it may have jump out of gear), and I will swap parts from my 59 or replace as necessary.
I can't sell the tractor, as it is my wife's, and she is sentimental, but for me to make it a super would be fine. My part tractor is 100% complete, so I will need for nothing in the swaps.
I rebuilt my block to 152 and it is the best running Dexta engine I have ever seen; a real keeper. This fits, the parts super block will give me an extra, and I can sell or scrap the rest. I will have a lot of parts to sell, and one bay to park a running tractor.
This will make 4 Super Dexta tractors on my farm. One set of spares.
THANKS FOR THE ADVICE.

Wayne

UPDATE. Both tractors have transmision and rear ends RE-assembled. The parts tractor is ready to pull out of the shop fully assembled with my old rear end. Taking my time with the Dexta to Super Dexta conversion. I was pleasantly surprised when I pulled the Super Dexta part tracor apart. Very clean, and clearly had not been pulled apart. The top cover had been pulled but nothing else. I swapped the PTO pawl and assembly of tranny to rear end was so easy. Compared to my Ford 4000, this job was simple and easy to do. On scale of 1-10, with ten difficulty near impossible, this jobs was a 2. On the used to be Dexta, but now is a super Dexta, have married the engine back to the tranny, and will get her running.
When I assembled the tranny to the rear end, I put the coupler shaft on the rear end, pulled it back until it was almost off the spline, and reached in and started it on the tranny spline. I went together so easy. I had fabricated a gasket out G-paper, and had all the bolts in holding gasket on. Too easy.
Don't think I will mount the fuel tank, but use a small tank to run it. Will not fully assemble, will paint before assembly. Prior to that, will do axle seals & bearings and re-line brakes. Then it get washed and scrubed for painting.

It will be the paint that makes this Super Dexta better than my others for the wife.....
