I can"t get my gears to engage clutch not letting it happen can"t disengage pto. adjusted according to book still not letting me engage. I can engage it in gear with the engine off. but I don"t think the clutch is working even with tractor off I couldn"t disengage the pto. any help would be appreciated.

Usually happens when the clutch disk sticks to the flywheel due to rust binding the two together. The fix is to try to put a sudden load on the drivetrain in first gear. Really have to be careful that you don't cause the front end to raise. If you have a front bumper use it to push a tree. You may have to put a jumper on the starter switch to start it in gear. You will hold the clutch pedal down while loading it and hope it breaks loose. I hoped that was my problem but mine had the other issue: throw-out bearing release arms were worn off so moving the pedal didn't move anything inside. That required splitting the tractor and replacing the pressure plate and disk.

do you have a oil leak and is the cotter key in the hole under the tractor to keep the hole open and let any oil drain out? if the clutch disc is full of oil it will not release very well. the cotter key is under the clutch housing right in the center there is a hole to drain any leaking oil out if the cotter key is missing the hole will be plugged with dirt

If you have good brakes, try this.
I did it on the neighbors Deere and no more problems.
Basically start the tractor in gear. First gear is best. With the tractor moving forward, foot on clutch and aply the brakes to stop the tractor.
Use the brakes to force the flywheel to break loose.
Next time you park it, hold the clutch pedal down with a "C" clamp around the running board or a board pushing down. Just make sure the clutch is not engaged with the tractor parked. I did the neighbors tractor twice, about two months apart. He now has a rod to keep the clutch open.
Desire to eliminate the problem? Install a custom made Kevlar clutch. I did. That was before I found it it would relieve the sticking clutch problem.

Jumping the starter could be a jumper wire to the starter solenoid or a battery jumper cable from the battery diect to the starter.
Now if you don"t have good brakes, it might not work.

If you can -start it in gear - get it to a down hill incline where you can stop and restart in 4th,Holding the clutch down get it moving enough to use full throttle (that will get the engine into the torque curve) and jab the brakes hard off and on. The reason 4th gear? Because the tractor has more mechanical advantage over the rngine and will get the most torque through the clutch to break it free. Interesting note in My Kubota manual it says when put up for a season use a block of wood to hold the clutch pedal depressed ,to prevent this. Same as Bruce said - its a good idea,
