i have a 1975 david brown 990 works good only thing is when i engages pto to 540 arm shakes and the it disengages what can do that

Does it do it in 1000 too?

If not probably a broken gear. If 1000 does it as well, could be a bearing. Either case it means pulling the pto box off and replacing it, or rebuilding it.

The housing behind the rear axle is the PTO box. Not hard to swap out, but it weighs about 200 pounds.

I have pulled them and fixed them in a hour to a hour and half,, those are not bad at all to work on,, takes longer to drain the oil than pull the unit for me anyway but I have been at this a while

ok so 2 to 3 hours to do would you have the bearing number esterior bearing is new and how many bearings r inside and is there anything else to change since its opened up

check the 1000 shakes but less will get through this snow storm then will get it towed to the shop will call later to get a time to get it done it only has 1100 hours and what is the best bearing to install inside

that pto problem fixed now i have another problem there is oil around the 2 covers on the side of block and has oil leaking up to frame not much but you see its humide on frame

Likely just tired 43 year old gaskets. You can try gently snugging the bolt in the center of each cover. Probably best to replace the gaskets when the weather gets better.

Yes. the lifters for the push rods and the return passages from the rocker cover are behind them.
