there are two local AL posts and i would like to join one of them. i currently am a "ghost" AL member. problem is both allow smoking in their buildings. now i know folks like to complain of gov't intrusion in our lives but one thing the gov't did right (IMO) is to start the ball rolling with prohibiting smoking in public places. i once belonged to a local gun club and one day i was having a burger and the guy next to me lighted up a smoke. that was the end of that place. even when i was a pack a day smoker i never lighted up when some one was eating nearby. it is absolutely amazing how smoking bugs the crap out of me since i stopped 30 years ago. (when the first kid came along)

The reason the government has to interfere is because the smokers don't care if they bother other people. I have nothing against smoking but in buildings, at the gas pump and especially around kids, cant they wait?

As I travel in so many cities nation wide I frequent many American Legions, some which prohibit smoking others while allow it. One argument is its for the "most part" A PRIVATE CLUB so MEMBERS who fought and laid their lives in harms way to defend the countrys freedom should be able to decide THEIR OWN freedom and rules such as permitted smoking and if a person doesn't like it they have the freedom TO NOT ATTEND. In a similar fashion PRIVATE MEMBERS should be allowed to ban smoking in their own private membership clubs and if a person doesn't like it they can NOT attend.

I respect the choices of the PRIVATE CLUB members be it smoking or not smoking and if I don't like the rules of one club or another I reserve the free choice NOT to attend. I wont impose my values and force people to go to one club or another and expect the same in return

Live and let live and respect the choices of private club members WHICH IT APPEARS TO BE AS SOME ALLOW SMOKING WHILE OTHERS DO NOT and I think the members should have that right. If a person doesn't like a club or its rules no one is forcing them to go there right ??

John T A non smoker

Not everyone that smokes is "evil". The State of Illinois (Chicago) enacted a public smoking ban several years ago. Amazing how many bars shut down after that. Its part of the reason, i don't go to many public places to spend money to help the economy.

gee guys i wasn't attacking anyone. just voicing the way it is with some of these places. no bars in this area shut down because of a smoking ban; bad management yes. if anything the smoking ban has helped business and i suppose it would help some Legion posts who are struggling to find members. at the one post i visited that allows smoking there were three guys sitting at the bar on a sat. afternoon. they no longer open the kitchen as they do not have enough members to support it.

Boy now that sounds like a great recruiting tool......if they don't like it, they have the freedom not to attend. Works for me. NOT!

This area where I live three, no four bars have closed in the past two years. The casinos must have a small smoking area or they loose that busines. Drives the HVAC guys crazy sometimes because there are special handlers in those areas.

The last "bar" I was in was a AL, VFW, I don't remember...

It was a fund raiser...

For a little girl with cancer.

And she was in there!

Could hardly see across the room, looked like the place was on fire!

Think I stayed about 15 minutes, made a donation, had to go! NASTY!

reminds of when wal mart got approval to build a store here in town. many folk were "up in arms" that WM would cause the closing of local shops and stores. well one store did close. the guy who owned it was a jerk that no liked so he did not last long. at that time my cousin owned the local Agway. he said he got a lot of run off business from WM as the employees would send customers to him when said customers could not get what they wanted at WM.
