I am trying to help out a friend, and am familiar with the older IH tractors, but totally ignorant of John Deere. When reinstalling a generator after repair does it need to be polarized? If so what is the procedure?
Thanks

Forgot to mention, I do have a copy of the wiring diagram I found on this site. That wiring diagram looks interesting to put it mildly. I have not actually seen this rig yet, so I do not know if it is still 12/24 or straight 12 volts.

It needs to be polarized.

Whether still 24 Volt, or converted to 12 Volts, the procedure is the same, momentarily jumper between the "BAT" and "GEN" terminals at the VR.

BE CAREFUL not to accidentally short to the VR case, or anything else ESPECIALLY if still a 24 Volt system. Doing so can let quite a bit of $$$$ smoke out of the system.

Most that were converted to 12V have alternators.

John, you ask "When reinstalling a generator after repair does it need to be polarized? If so what is the procedure?"

As usual Bob and I agree: I also advise you to Polarize a genny after a repair BUT BEFORE STARTING and that's true regardless if a 12 or 24 volt unit.

Thanks for everyone's replies. This tractor belongs to a non mechanically inclined friend of mine. He took the generator and starter both off and sent them to a shop (Cape Starter and Alternato) to be checked. The repaired the starter, but siad the generator checked out ok. He is hesitant about putting them back on saying the wiring appears to be somewhat butchered and asked me to give him a hand. It is setting in a barn that is open on one end, so I will not get anything done for a while, we have been running highs of 15 to 20 degrees here, only been above freezing 2 days of last 3 weeks. Quite a bit colder than normal for this area.
