My neighbor was finishing his basement. While he was setting walls he drilled through the concrete into the copper tubing. We were able to isolate the basement zone and chiseled out around the area. We plan to solder in a splice. I figure that concrete will be a heat sink that could make soldering difficult. Any suggestions?

Look for "shark bites". Slip them onto clean tubing and they seal with no leaks.

Or braze it with a silphos-copper rod. Surprise me because usually that is plastic PEX pipe.

That is the first time I have heard of using copper in 20 years, I thought copper will corrode in concrete.

Just solder or shark bite in a replacement.

You need to remove enough of the concrete to where you can get enough heat to get the solder to take. A copper "repair" coupling is a coupling without a stop built in to it. You can cut the tube, and lift one end up to slip the coupling over, then push that end down to line the 12 ends up, then slip the coupling over the cut ends, and solder. obviously, test before you cement up the hole. I would put a brass screw in the hole and silver braze it. Water that remains' in tube will have more effect on repair than the concrete. I've made solder joints hundereds of times where pipe come's out of concrete slab.

Did a house in Alberta MORE than 20 yrs. ago, and they used 3/4" copper on a 16" spacing. I questioned the longevity, but no one seemed to care.

After thinking about this, I would put a piece of PEX in the middle with compression fittings on the copper.

David, it depends how the concrete was formulated. If fly ash was used, the mix will corrode the copper, it not, usually no problem. Fly ash from a coal burning powerhouse is highly acetic. It used to be used as a filler in concrete. It was only discovered about 15 years ago that fly ash caused this. and yes, most PEX is desirable today, but not with compression fittings below concrete.

Give it about 3 in. Of room on both sides of solder joint you wont have any problems. Ive fixed many that people have drilled thru by soldering.

I've seen a plumber take a brass screw off an electrical outlet and solder it into the hole.
