Is it really necessary to use safety wire on the main caps on a 1940 Allis Chalmers B? I have looked at youtube videos on how to use it but can't seem to get the beginning part tight.

No, I really don't think it is. Any engine I took apart made after the 50's didn't use anything on the main caps. Just make sure you torque them down correctly.

This may help. There are lots of videos on YouTube, too. The idea is to position the wire so it resists the bolt loosening. That's why the S configuration.

Not trying to be a wise azz or anything, but there is 1 way to find out. Don't use it and if you ruin a crank shaft you'll know you should have. It's there to keep the bolts from working loose. I always figured the engineers would not have designed it that way if it weren't needed. With todays torque and metal it isn't required but back then it was for some reason or other. Just my thoughts, it's your machine, you do as you decide. Keith

It only takes a few minutes to do it,if you look at the examples on here you can see the proper way to do it.We safety wired everything on aircraft, I personally would do it for peace of mind.
