pertaining to 1949 era john deeres. manual says to drain oil out of transmission, for example, then fill with distillate. my ques, can i use diesel fuel to clean or will kerosene clean better?

Others will chime in, but I'd go with kero. Modern diesel has some compounds that don't like the old alloys. Just my $.02.

kerosene is a lot better cleaning fluid than diesel. something with diesel its poor for cleaning i find. plus diesel is very bad for the skin.

Kero and atf but nothing you can pour in is going to clean out all that 69 year old tar.
