I have a 424 IH. Manual calls for HyTran hydraulic fluid. What would be a substitute for this fluid? Is it 20w hydraulic and transmission fluid? I assume it is non foaming? Can you get it at TSC or farm supply stores?

You can use a substitute as long as it meets MS 1209 specs.

IHC Hy Tran was the exclusive IHC brand of hydraulic fluid. They claimed it had certain additives that some other hydraulic fluids did not have. For your tractor and any other non hydrostatic drive tractor or machine, any good grade hydraulic fluid sold for farm use by; oil jobbers, tractor supply places, parts houses, etc., will be fine. If I had a hydrostatic drive tractor or machine, I would only use genuwine Hy Tran from Case IH but that is just my preference. Do not use 20w engine oil or automobile automatic transmission fluid.

There's plain hydraulic fluid, which is for machine/ equipment control type stuff only, and then there's fluid for hydraulic & driveline combined, like Hy-Tran. Most modern tractors have a combined system and require the Hy-Tran type stuff- most all oil suppliers carry both spec oils, you have to get the one spec'd for hydraulic & transmission/ driveline service- and yes, it's more expensive. If you put plain hydraulic in a system requiring the hydraulic & driveline spec, you'll soon be very unhappy

If you would settle for a generic product, most retailers call it "Tractor Fluid". It is supposed to be an equivalent to Hy-Tran and other hydraulic/transmission lubricants branded by the OEM tractor mfgs. These retailers (like Walmart, etc) will also have buckets of several different weight hydraulic oils placed nearby. Check the labels.

Go to TSC and they'll an "equivelent" on the shelves. They'll have several differant types each claiming to meet the manufacturer's specs.

I think I saw a post here a while back from someone that had an analysis done that found Mystic was actually better (more additives) than Case/IH Hytran but "Travellers" was a poor substitute.

As with anything you read in the internet machine, research your own answer.

We used some cheap off-brand hydraulic/transmission (Hy-Tran comes from Hydraulic Transmission, referring to hydrostatics and powershifts in construction equipment) fluid one time, and replaced every hose on the backhoe twice within the month. Think it was Pitt-Penn. We rarely use actual CIH oil but we do stick with the name brands. Shell, Pennzoil, Valvoline, Mystic/citgo, NAPA, someone with a reputation to take care of. And a warranty beyond replacing the bad bucket of oil.

Case construction also has an "HTF" or "HTO" additive that you mix in a certain ratio with 10w-30 motor oil.
